Please help with DYH coloring

Postby jippypop on Sun Jun 08, 2008 8:01 pm

I just purchased a pair of DYH Amazons. The female looks like normal coloring but the male is different. The male has a lot more yellow that wraps around his neck about half way down. Also the top of his head the feathers are tinged red. It is not blood I checked. It is like the ends of the feathers are scalloped in red. It really is quite pretty. Also he has a lot more red on his upper wings. Is this a different species of DYH?
Thanks

Hello.

Based on my experience with this species, the flicks of red on the DYH's head/neck margin is a sign of maturity. Not all get it - some show more than others. Some females could develope the red flicks as well, as some believe only the males get red.
it sounds to me like your male could be/ or have Magna Double Yellow-headed Amazon in him. Look up the Magna DYH Amazon. Magnas are usually a lot brighter in color and are usually larger in comparison with the other subspecies of DYH's. A Magna also could have much more extensive yellow markings throughout their body. The Tres Maria DYH is another subspecies that has an extensive amount of yellow on its head, but doesn't usually have as much red with yellow feathers on its shoulder - Tres's usually have the reg. amount of red on the shoulders. Color variations exist of course.... and cross breeding happens.
