How many eggs?

Postby did on Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:02 pm

For the past 24 days, (counting from the 1st egg) my pair has been on 6 eggs. Expecting the 1st eggs to hatch any day now, I've been peeking in the box for the last couple of days. Well, when I went to turn out the lights, I found 2 more eggs. A total of 8 eggs. I am starting to get worried that she may start to over lay. I decited to candle all the eggs and found this: 3 to 4 eggs almost complete and ready to hatch, 2 eggs mabe 50% of the way. And 2 eggs that are clear, or too early to tell. What should I do to get her to stop laying, or is this normal? I am feeding 50% pellets(breeder pellets), and 50% fruit and veggies daily. I offer seeds mabe 2 or 3 times a week. Should I get them off the high protien pellets(20%)? This is their first clutch. Please advice.

You did not say what kind of bird this is that is laying. But from checking one of your other posts... this must be about your GCC. Well, some hens will stop but if anything like my Sister's Maximilian Pionus, her hen will lay like 16 eggs or more and if she takes some away, she will lay again up until she has like 16 eggs or so... she possibly can not incubate all of them... and some would go bad if not fertile. So my sister lets her lay up to near her quota and will then take them as laid, as I know she dates the eggs when laid pretty much, she has even given me eggs to incubate for her. Depending upon what type of bird you have, if smaller type like Cockatiels and some others where the male takes turns incubating or even going in and sitting at the same time... it could be done that way but some parrots, the males do not sit on eggs at all or taking turns incubating the eggs.

I am not sure why some hens lay and lay. Some people tend to think it could be something medically going on with the hen... I think some hens just get carried away with it!!
