Do I pul l the egg?

Postby did on Mon Mar 31, 2008 4:53 pm

My DYA's have been working the box for a few weeks. She has spent around 70% of her time in the box. Sometimes by herself, sometimes both male and female. This afternoon, when I went out to change their water, she was out, and I found an egg at the btm of the cage, and she was out of the box. I don't know if she laid it off the perch, or she threw it out of the box. The egg does have a few pieces of pine chips on it(shavings I use in the box). My question is this, do I go in and remove the egg off the floor, or just leave it? Where it is, it is at the end of her 6ft length cage. If I go in will it cause much kaos causing her to step on her eggs in the box? What is the best thing to do? I've been avoiding looking in the box so I wouldn't disturb, but should I go in and ck on all the other eggs? What to do. The sun will settle in about an hour or so, and I want to do or not do something now. Please advice.

Pick up the egg and put it in a safe place, till you feel brave.
Check to see if there are any cracks that need to be repaired.
(I use white-out/correction fluid. Just a small amount.)
Later, if you feel like it, check the nest for other eggs.
I don't know how your birds will react, but my birds
go back to the nest.

Well, I went in that night and pulled the egg. They did not get agressive like I though. The egg was crack beyond repair. I went ahead and checked the nest and did not notice any other eggs. She did sleep out of the box that evening, and has started acting the same as she has been for the last few weeks. As soon as I approach she runs into her box. My hope now is that this was her first egg of the season, and she has a few more to try to incubate.

Normally DYH hens lay 3-5 eggs in a clutch and most pairs will double clutch.....rare to only lay one egg.....seeing her first egg was destroyed she will likely lay another to replace it on top of her normal clutch.
