lovebird breeding Q

Postby mgbirds on Thu Mar 20, 2008 4:06 pm

how long between clutches should i let the hen go before letting her breed again? i know she shouldn't be overbred so what is the norm? i've read that they shouldn't have more than 2-3 clutches in a year. is this correct?

if anyone can help or direct me to where i should look for more info that would be great.

Everything I've seen for all breeding birds is no more than 2 clutches a year.

If possible, I would try to wait 6 months in between clutches, but I do know that this is not always possible.

If they are well fed, healthy, happy and in a large enough cage to get some excercise, I'd let them have two clutches that are removed for handfeeding and then let them parent raise and wean a clutch by themselves.

LB Q

thanks for all replies. maybe i will raise one more clutch and then let them raise one on thier own. i did want to see how tame babies can be if i'm holding them as much as mom will tolerate, but let them stay in the nest. she has been good so far letting me check on babies and i did handle them just long enough to see how they were doing. a couple of them had splayed leggs, so i pulled them right at two weeks to correct the problem i think she sits to tight on them all are doing fine now.

Do they have enough bedding to prevent splayed legs? If so, could it be genetic or just her being too enthusiastic about sitting tight? I don't know much about splayed legs and have always heard it had to do with bedding...
