Sometimes selling babies to a good pet store is worth it if they will give a fair price. I recently had an angry pet store owner tell me that us breeders who sell babies on the internet will be putting pet stores out of business because of the lower prices that we can charge. I told him, NO NEED TO MAKE 100 % PROFIT ON EVERY BABY YOU SELL IN YOUR PET STORE WITH MARK UPS SKY HIGH.He says that he has over head to run a store. I told him, try getting no sleep and day one feed babies and tell me WHO GIVES UP ALOT...TO HAVE HEALTHY CHICKS AND FIND GOOD HOMES..

Unfortunately most of the big box stores fail to realize that not only do they make money on the bird, but they also make money on the sale of the cage, toys, food, etc. People don't just buy a bird, they have to buy the essentials that go with them. Breeders only make money of the sale of the bird. And let's not even go into our overhead/upkeep. The pet shops could match our retail prices and make their money on the accessories. Afterall, they only pay us wholesale prices for our birds, not retail. That is why I like dealing with the smaller family owned pet stores. They think more of the needs of the breeders as well as the customers. (JMO)

It reminds me of this pet store my friend dealt with. She has raised and shown chinchillas for years. She too actively shows and competes and breeds only top quality animals. Even so prices from her and other respectable chinchilla breeders is often much less than from a pet store.
He had the nerve to tell her that she was ruining the chinchilla species by selling hers for less than he sold his. WHAT!????! She breeds and raises them to show/industry standards. His looked umm not good shall we say.

It all came down to the almighty dollar. He also refused any thought of a bird flyer, etc since "only crappy breeders and vendors would sell at a bird fair for the prices they sell items for". He is so afraid of losing even a pennys worth of business it is hilarious.
