Incubators

Postby Kerrie on Fri Dec 28, 2007 8:01 pm

So what do you guys use? I am updating and getting a new incubator and brooder (my old one is pretty sad and isn't good for much more than chicken and duck eggs). I haven't had much use for an incubator anyway, but I figure its always good to have a back up.

I'm thinking about getting the Brinsea Octagon Pro 20 DX Package with the Octagon 20 Brooder Attachment. I like how it all regulates the humidity and wet bulb temperature.

What does everyone else use and how do you like it???
Thanks!

Ive only been breeding for a year now but in that year Ive got to known alot of the top breeders around and Ive asked this question about the Brinsea Octagon incubater all answers were the same these incubaters are only ok, what alot of breeders uses are the true x tunrners they are cheap enouf and dose a great job, here is a web site check it out www.lyonusa.com look at the TX6 with manual egg turning, note they also have the auto egg turner but i was told it rotates the eggs once every hour and thats to often, its easyer to manual turn the eggs 3 to 4 times a day your self, I hope this was of help to you good luck and have A Happy new years

    I use...

    Brinsea
have incubator and octo brooder...in fact also comes in handy for sick or injured adults as well as babies.

I don't use my wet bulb at all, but my room humidity is normally around 50 percent so both brooder and incu stay high without wet bulb by just keeping water in chambers.

    Re: Brooders

I have both the Brinsea TLC-4 and TLC-5 brooders. The TLC-4 is smaller and very portable. I also got the power adapter so I could use it in the car. I bought the TLC-5 because it had just come out, and Brinsea had $150 or more discount at the time. I figured I could always use it if I had more than one clutch at the same time or if I had a sick bird. I bought both brooders through CT Aviaries and got an additional 10% discount.

I also have a Turn-X 7 http://www.lyonusa.com/MARSHCART/910-067A.htm which is with the automatic turner which to me is a must and turning the eggs once every hour does not seem to matter. I have Pionus & Amazon. You really want an incubator that turns eggs automatically. As for brooders, I use Avitech's Brooder Tops and do fine with those and I have 5 of them http://www.avitec.com/Aquarium-Brooder-Tops-p/avq.htm and use them until babies out grow them, then they are old enough by then to go into larger plastic tubs and won't usually require heat by that time seeing that it is usually summer time when I have babies.

Honestly, when it comes to chick's lives, you do not want to skimp on quality... their lives depend upon that incubator being in good operation 24/7 while they are in there as an egg.

Also in addition to candling eggs, I have the "Buddy" a Digital Egg Monitor where you can see a heart rate and this tells you if the egg is fertile... another expensive thing to have but then again we have all been in position such as "Is this egg alive or not" scenario... don't want to toss out any eggs that may have hatched... this little goodie you will find on this link... http://www.avianbiotech.com/buddy.htm their link to purchase is not going to the right product. This unit is like over $300.

    Incubators

Grumbach is what we use almost exclusively. All the other incubators we have tried (except for the older Humidaire's - which are great) were not worth the money.
