Question on bandaging?

Postby stubbfam on Sat Sep 22, 2007 10:18 am

Hi all,

Got a little keet that tore a flap loose on the underside of his front long toe. Got it cleaned out, him on antibiotics, no longer bleeding.

My question is, knowing keets, anything they can see is going to be picked at. Since it's on the underside of the toe, everytime he moves around on the perches or bars, he tugs that flap loose.

Has anyone ever used Liquid Skin or Liquid Bandaid on their bird? I was thinking that if it was avian safe, it would help hold the flap closed while it healed. He's leaving the toe alone himself, at least from what I can see, so I'm not terribly worried about him ingesting it - althougth ya never know LOL!

Just wondering about topical safety. Anyone??

Thanks

I wouldn't use it. I tried it on myself, it burned like mad, the fumes were horrible, and it came off about 30 minutes later with rubbing on my shirt.

I would move him to a hospital cage with no perches and something soft on the floor. If he picks at it, they do have collars for the tiny birds, but he may leave it alone.

Thanks for your advice Christy. I had never had that happen with me or the kids we use it on - sports - but if it happens to one person, it could happen to the fids.

He is in a hospital cage with soft footings. Just normal walking around and hanging on bars - ever see a keet stay off a cage wall LOL?! - just using it seems to irritate it.

He's doing good tho'. Wash it out twice a day, antibiotic cream on it, antibiotics in the water. Not quite so ouchie as it was, according to him!

Just thought that if the Liquid skin stuff worked for others, it would add an alternative to the birdy medicine chest.

    Thanks
