Quaker Colony

Recently I put all of our Quakers in a flight cage so they could pair off.

I did this after MUCH frustration of sexing and pairing them myself. I had them all sexed and paired, only to discover they were opening their cage doors and going in other Quakers cages. It didn't help that when they would do this they would go with the same sex bird. I even had a split male go in a Tiel cage and live with them for a while (he refused to leave and the Tiels bossed him around).

So needless to say I built a flight cage and put them all in. None of the birds has ever been in the cage and I put new nestboxes on that they had never used. Thinking the "pair" of girls would separate and go with males. This did NOT happen, instead I ended up with a pair of girls and 2 males paired off.

However, I am happy to report that the girls are busy making a nest and the boys are as well.

So now instead of getting cussed out by a pair here and there I get cussed out by several "pairs" all at once.

Me and my bright ideas!!

Dont you hate when something like that happens. I had my breeder green-cheeks awaiting sexing in the same area. One let him self out and paired with another. Upon further inspection, they were the only 2 of the 7 sexed, both boys and 1 was my split turquoise male the other a YS male, lol.

I just want to hit my head against a wall. So much for that lovely pair :)

it seems to happen quite a bit with younger birds. its pretty funny cause when you see them your like. wow! they love each other. must be a good pair. then you get your results and you gotta laugh. ive had a few like that, but when the hormones kicked in they were up agaist the side of the cage lookin at nearby females. i havent had any older ones that didnt want a female. but i suppose theres gota be the exception. maybe they had bad experiance a swore off the opposite sex. as long as they dont start snappin each other in the butt with towels after a birdy shower i still will love havin them around.

You would swear looking at them that they all paired up, but they didn't, well I mean not in the true sense of the word.

I have another update, Puppy (DNA'd male) has now taken to a nest box and refuses to leave it. While his mate Larry has to feed him.

I swear they sit and plan and plot on what they are going to do next to make "mom" go crazy. It's working!

I've just decided to let them be. If I ever get babies great and if not at least I have an audience to cuss me out, laugh at me and tell me to step up while I clean.

LOL..probably. I really wouldn't doubt ANYTHING at this point.

There are 2 birds in there that are wild, the rest were all pets that decided to lay eggs or found interest in other Quakers.

So I get a wide variety of "noise" from that cage. Some telling me to "Step up", then saying "OUCH" then all of them laughing. Yes I fell for it a few times. They are good and even lift their little feet when saying "step up" or "gimme kiss". YEAH RIGHT!!

I don't know what they have planned next, I don't think I really wanna know either.

5 out of 7 laugh. 2 are wild caught so they could care less as long as you don't look at them.
