pellets for breeding macaws

Postby diana5000 on Tue Jul 17, 2007 11:34 am

Hello,

Has anyone ever used Pretty Bird Pellets for breeding macaws. I specially in the greenwing macaws and have always used Zupreem, but I was told Pretty Bird might be better. Is there any other kind of pellets that good for them.

Thanks

I wouldn't feed pellets, and if i did, i'd *never* feed pretty bird.
It Contains BHT, a substance known to cause cancer and a whole bunch of nasty stuff. It's banned in a lot of countries including sweden, germany etc. I think it's banned to us in babyfood in the US, but okay otherwise. Why, i can't understand.

It also contains alot of artificial colors, sugar, and alot of nasty stuff.

I'd stick to an all fresh diet if i were you, i wouldn't want babys to grow up on that kind of stuff.

    Diet for Macaws

Postby Featherkeeper on Wed Jul 18, 2007 8:41 am

The subject of pellets always bring out many and varied opinions when it comes to birds. I learned a long time ago to not get involved when it comes to specific brands, etc. I am not discounting their merit as PART of a balanced diet.

What has already been mentioned, and I agree wholeheartedly, is that any bird, breeder or pet, should have a varied diet which offers them a variety of nutritious foods.

A bird's diet shouldn't consist of just one specific food type such as seed or pellets alone. You want to offer your birds as many fresh and whole foods as possible. This would include vegetables, legumes, sprouts, grains, fruits, hard-cooked eggs, red palm oil, seed and pellets, if you're so inclined.
At times, supplements might be necessary, such as liquid calcium.

Successful breeding comes from healthy birds that are on diets that give them as much natural nutrition as possible.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I just wanted to stay of the right track. I feed my alot of veggies, nuts, fruits, which they are eating me out of house and home, but they are worth it. I just want to keep them happy and healthy.
