Worried about my Alexandrine cock

Postby fruitwerks on Sun Jul 15, 2007 1:38 pm

I have a pure Alexandrine who was paired with a normal hen for around 5 years. Then hen has been replaced with a grey-green. They have been together for about 6 months now. He feeds her and they hang out sometimes. But now that it is their season, she is always in the box and he stays outside. She will come out and pull or bite on his wing feathers and he gets rather annoyed. It is clear that he is fearful of her. This has been going on for over a month now. I have been told the hens can get get very aggressive - I have seen this myself in my IR pairs. I am thinking that they were not able to bond enough before the season started. Should I let them be or remove one of them until the season is over? I have already clipped back the hen, as well as her nails.

I had this problem with indian ring necks before. I removed nest box and let them bond longer.........Didn't help  ! My hen just needed a more aggressive male. Probably not what you are wanting to hear but may save you some time if you start looking for other more compatable mates. How ever you choose to proceed I wish you luck. Also keep in mind what works for one breeder pair may not work for another pair as each bird is an individual :)

The cock is a very chill bird, he is about 6 years old. The hen is proven last season, and probably her first. I ended up separating them, well my wife did. We took a look at him when she got home and his wings were bruised, tail feathers bitten off, a swollen toe from multiple bites. We knew she was aggressive, but we figured he was ok with her. His last mate plucked his wing patches and the back of his head - those are actually slowly filling in :)

here is a picture of him :)
