big crop 1 mo old baby

Postby biocellguy on Tue May 01, 2007 6:51 pm

I have a 1 month old cockatiel which is has a big crop since last night. The normal crop movement is occurring. In the past, I brought a baby into the vet for an emergency (exorbitant fees) for an over stretched crop (from the parents). This one is not “overstretched.” She acts normal ( plays, chirps, asks for food, likes being pet, etc.). I made the Exact baby food as if she was 1 day and took only the liquid portion (water soluble stuff mostly) and gently messaged the crop. I also have held her in a warm compress (wet paper towels in a plastic bag wrapped in a towel) and massaged the crop. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be working. Do you recommend doing the few drops of Maalox, Digel, or mineral oil method and if the crop shrinks then give a mix of Pedialyte and papaya juice?

Thank you a lot

sounds a lot like a yeast infection to me. Nystatin is what you would need to treat that. Is the crop always bloated? Or does it go down completely in between feedings? It is caused by feeding too close together and not letting the crop empty out completely. It should empty at least once every 24 hours. Or it is caused by dirty feeding equipment that has allowed the bacteria to grow. Hopefully this can be of some help.
