GreenWing Macaws lay 5 eggs

Postby bikerboy7345 on Mon Jan 02, 2012 11:03 pm

Hi. Everyone
I have one pairs of GreenWing. They laid 5 eggs. Does anyone ever had 5 eggs before?
I am thinking I may have two females. But I saw they copulated. Normally the male stay out side and feed the female. But both of them incubated and go out to eat the same times.

Do you think it will work if I put a male in? 2 females and 1 male?

Apologies ... my threesomes are not macaws. I've never bred macaws, so cannot help you. Just wanted to make the point that I've seen 2 males and 2 females each copulating before. There is literature available via google about homosexuality being as likely in other animals as it is in humans and, additionally, captive birds will often bond with the only mate they're given even when they might prefer another.

I agree, it is quite possible you have two hens, especially if the eggs were laid within a shorter period of time than 1 hen may lay on her own. There are many same-sexed pairs sold as "proven" breeders because they copulated.

You may want to get both birds DNA sexed by one or two DNA sexing companies. I'd recommend Zoogen as a reliable place. I know one excellent breeder who prefers this place, and it is also the same lab that my a-vet uses. DNA sexing typically costs $20-$25 per bird, plus shipping, and Zoogen has an easy to fill out form that you can print and send in with a sample(s).

Hi Have you tried 'Candling' the eggs to see if they're fertile?

If none are there's a good chance you have two females without the

expense of a DNA test Yours. B. J.

They are stop laying after 6 eggs for 3 days now. Inside the nest box. It looks like 2 clutches. Both of them sit on it. If you see in the picture. You know what I am talking about.
