Quakers will not lay any eggs

Postby Abeds Aviary on Mon Nov 13, 2006 6:18 pm

I have a pair of quakers that I bought about 2 years ago. I have DNA papers on them. They were proven for the previous owner. They just wont breed or anything. Is there anything I can do to make them come into breeding. Thanks!

What kind of environment are they in? Some birds wont breed if they are in a room filled with movement. Are there other animals around (birds, cats, dogs, etc.) What kind of nest box do they have? Do they go in the nest box? Do they act bonded? Are you 100% sure of the person you got them from, can you fully trust that they are a proven pair? Some birds are picky about their cage, nest box and surroundings so these questions might be able to help you determine why your pair isnt producing babies yet.

Quakers will not lay any eggs

Postby Abeds Aviary on Tue Nov 14, 2006 9:17 pm

The pair is in my bird room. I have other birds in there but the only loud ones are the conures. They go in to the box which is cockatiel size. They spend alot of time in it. They act very bonded. Every now and then they make like a small nest with feathers and bedding, but after a few days the nest is gone. When I bought the pair I got I cage they were in and the box they used. I trust the person I got them from. I have gotten many birds from him and he buys most of my babies. Do you think that a quiter environment might help them any? Thanks!

How much light do they have every day? What are they being fed? What is the temprature of the room? Did you try giving them other types of bedding?

My husband and I have personally experienced Quakers that do exactly as you desribed and the problem was the noice of the other conures around them. It is a possibility that they are not happy in the room they are in, if you have a quieter room that you can move them into it might be worth a try moving them.

Here are some other things you can do that might help bring them into breeding:

Increase their fresh foods and add plenty of sprouts and soaked seeds (we give Fresh foods every day)

What kind of light cycle do you have? You can start at 10hours a day and increase them to 14 hours and that might bring them into breeding.

Add Spiralina and Nekton E to their fresh foods to bring them into breeding.

Give them a misting bath daily (if they like it).

And a couple alternatives would be to put them in the quieter room or some say to pack the pair up and give them a ride around the block in a pet carrier, a lot of the pro breeders swear by this method...we have a few pairs of stubborn Amazons that if they dont get to doing their business this is what will happen to them, lol.

Quakers will not lay any eggs

Postby Abeds Aviary on Tue Nov 14, 2006 10:06 pm

The tempeature stays about 68 to 70. I feed them zupreem breeder pelets five days a week and seed two days a week. I try giving them fruits but most of the time they wont eat it. They are very scared every time I feed and water them they start flying all over the cage and they go in and out of the box. I have a full spectrum light in the room. I keep it on usually 8-12 hours a day.

I am going to move them in with my greys to see if it will help.

Thanks for your help.

That might help to calm them down. If they are that startled, they may not feel "safe" enough to try and breed yet.

something I see that might be preventing them from breeding is the feeding schedule, please keep in mind this is just how we do things, there are several ways for things to be done and this is simply my opinion. We (my husband and I) recommend keeping pellets in a birds cage at all times. Most birds will not breed if they are limited on their food intake. We provide pellets full time and like you dry seed 2 times per week (but they get soaked and sprouted seeds daily), we also provide fresh foods in the form of veggies, breads, beans, pastas, etc and very little if any fruit daily. Parrots need very little fruit but tons of veggies, grains, beans, rice, breads etc, now Lories on the other hand need lots of fruit. It will take a bird some time to get used to eating fresh foods, they will think it is poison for months and then one day they take the plunge and give it a try, after that getting them to eat fresh foods is a breeze, lol.

We had to get timers for our lights because a few of our pairs didnt like it not being consistant, since we got the timers those pairs have gone to nest and laid.

From the sounds of it the pair is very skiddish so the problem may be the noise level in the room.

Hope some of this helps, breeding parrots takes tons of patients so hang in thier!

Quaker - not laying

Postby fruitwerks on Sun Jun 24, 2007 11:05 pm

All of the mentioned above are good. I would like to add my two cents. If you are still having this issue, move them up high, to a corner if possible. Try adding hemp seed and or wheat germ oil.

Good Luck!

Quakers wont lay any eggs

Postby Abeds Aviary on Sun Jun 24, 2007 11:12 pm

Thanks for your help. I sold this pair a few months ago. The lady I sold them to did not have them 2 weeks and they laid fertile eggs. I guess they just did not like how I had them. Thanks
