GCC LEG HOBBLES

Postby fullkeel on Mon Apr 11, 2011 4:18 pm

Trying to fix splayed legs in this 15 day old that was removed from the nest box today. I added some shredded newspaper to the aquarium floor.
You can see how I have done it in this link. If anyone thinks I should be doing something differently, please let me know. For example, my girlfriend thinks the hobbled legs are still a bit too far apart.

here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5_LswuQ2zY

Thanks you
And a BIG thanks to you Did!!

Pete

Did is correct. There are various methods in correcting splayed legs, and I do not know at what age a chick is too old for their legs to be corrected (may depend on species), so if his legs do not return 100% back to normal, it may have just been too late. Still, he can learn to live a happy and wonderful life with splayed legs as a disability!

I can only say that an experienced breeder (which I am not) or an a-vet would be able to tell you if you are fixing the problem correctly. Best of luck with the little one!

    Yes, Did is correct.
I really don't want to risk taking them to a vets office, however I would if it were necessary. But I don't think I will need a vet for leg hobbles, they seem to be a pretty straight forward remedy. However, I could see someone wanting a vet to do it if they got freaked out by the process.

Geez, The hobbles have been on for about 6 hours now and he is standing upright for the first time. I don't want to count my chickens, but I am very optimistic about the outcome after seeing how they are working so far.

    Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you are going to get positive results. Do not try and take off the hobbles too quick. I would leave them on for at least a week. Keep an eye on the other babies, the sooner you catch a problem, the better.

How did you sleep? Long night? lol
