Out side birds breeding in winter

Postby marioc on Sat Mar 26, 2011 12:34 am

All of my birds out side have layed and some have hatched babies this winter, 2 Pairs of B&G 1 pair of Green Wing 1 Pair of cockatoos and 1 pair of African Greys, I live in Oregon and it does get pretty cold here, I thought birds usually only laid in Spring and Summer, But these guys have laid all winter. They are now sitting on their second clutch and are due to hatch around the 29th of this month. Would like any feed back. any suggestions would be welcomed. I have created a page on my Dog website if you wish to view them. the link is http://www.coronadoyorkies.com/birds.htm

Interesting. Can't say I have heard before of parrots breeding in the winter in very cold winter climates. Looking forward to further updates from you. Thank you for sharing the info.

Hello Mario -- I'd just enjoyed the pix of your birds when I came across an article in the current issue of Parrots magazine that might interest you. Do you know Laney Rickman, who breeds blue-throated macaws in Texas? A lot of her practices and pix of her breeding cages are used in the article. Here's the first page ... I hope you can enlarge it enough to view the images and read the text.

Thanks for the feed back. I was not able to read the article, it was too small saved it as a pic and then tried to make it bigger but not enough pix so it was not clear, But I was able to veiw her cages, much larger then mine and that sure gives them a lot more room. The only thing I like about ours is that they can be moved.

The only bad thing of them breeding in the winter is that you have to pull the babies as soon as they are born or you will loose them, I have lost 3 so far, they get cold and will not make it. Spring and Summer is much better, So we just keep a close eye on them and try to get them as soon as they hatch. The African Greys and the Green Wing were just paired last summer and GW have has laid 3 times, but not fertile, and the AG have laid 3 times and not fertile, sitting on egs now and are due around the 29th so will keep an eye on them, The B&G have had 2 clutches this winter and both had babies. the baby on my web site was born on 3-13-11. I still can not belive that they are breeding in the winter, they must be very comfortable where they are. There is convenient store close buy and a busy street right behind them and all that noise dues not bother them.

You may want to make it darker for them during the winter months to curb their breeding, I am in georgia and my macaws breed in the spring, I use clear plastic on their cages to keep them warmer
