Hopeful parakeet(sitting on eggs 4 nothing)

Postby psychichotic on Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:14 pm

My daughter was given a parakeet by a family member after it's cagemate(a sibling) escaped and was never found. My other daughter got a cockatiel for her b-day. After a few months talking to one another across the room wasn't enough for the keet and (we thought it was a he at the time) started escaing it's cage and getting in the tiel cage. after a week of seperating them I gave up and they moved in together. Just after that we started finding eggs. I figured since they were diff species they were infertile eggs and noone sat on them so I got rid of them. That has been happening occasionally for a few months now. This past week the keet began sitting on 2 eggs in the bottom of the cage, is it possible they are fertile?? should she know the diff?? Should I let her keep trying or get rid of them??? Please someone help me :? I don't want to hurt her if possible, even emotionally. Thanks in advance.

No, the two species are unrelated. Do you have pictures of the birds? And the cage setup? How old are they?

Removing the eggs wont do much except to encourage more eggs, unless you change things around. The birds will need 12-14 hours of sleep, rearrange the cage, perhaps even move the cage to a new location. Even if you do remove the eggs, it's best to keep them in the fridge in case the hen starts laying again. If she does this, you can replace her eggs which will make her stop laying too many.
