pallid quaker breeding question

Postby cutelilbirdies on Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:57 pm

Hello all!

I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I've been breeding birds for almost 10 years, and am just now getting into breeding quakers. My question is about the one pair I have, the female is pallid blue, and the male is blue. I have been lookin all over online and cant find how the genetics works for pallids. If this pair has babies what will the colors likely be? Is pallid a sex linked gene? I've heard its hard to find a pallid blue male since most of them are born females. If I want to get visual pallid blue males do I need both male and female to be visual pallids? Will this pair likely have any visual pallids? Or just splits? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks in advance!

Blue male x Pallid Blue female will result in Blue split to Pallid male chicks and Blue female chicks - no visual Pallids.

Pallid is sex-linked, so the male offspring will get the Pallid gene from their mother. Blue is recessive. In order to get a visual Pallid Blue male, both father and mother need to carry the Pallid and Blue genes. Below are pairings that will produce Pallid Blue chicks in both sexes:

Green/Blue/Pallid x Pallid Blue - in my opinion this pairing produces the strongest Pallid Blue chicks
    Blue/Pallid x Pallid/Blue
Pallid Blue x Pallid/Blue - produces Pallid/Blue and Pallid Blue offspring
Pallid Blue x Pallid Blue - produces 100% Pallid Blue offspring - I don't recommend this breeding unless you have seriously outcrossed birds.
