Snakes!!!!!!!!!

Postby Dalton on Sun May 03, 2009 3:17 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions to keep snakes away? I have relocated 11 snakes in the last 2 weeks. I have never had a problem with them before but it seems like all of the sudden someone opened up the flood gates. I am not afraid od them by any means but with so many of my pairs hatching and setting on eggs I am starting to get concerned. I have not lost any as of yet but I know it is only a matter of time and would like to prevent any loss to snakes before it happens. Just thought I would ask and see if anyone has had to deal with this before and how you prevailed. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi - not sure how your set up is... but is there a way to surcure a small mesh wire like 1/2" mesh to your area to prevent them from coming in? Hard to say not knowing how your aviary situation is laid out. Perhaps too using sheet metal up 2 feet or so but you would have to go all the way around the premeter of your buidling. Make sure no shrubs, trees and ect or other objects are touching your buidling that can help aid them to getting on the plants to help them get in.

Knock on wood I've never had snakes get inside my aviaries. I have one aviary that has the 10 gauge wire that is 1" wide by 3" high mesh and I have 1/2" mesh all over that wire to actually keep out mice or rats and my other aviary has sheet metal that starts from the ground and is 18" high and above it is the wire mesh of 1/2" wide by 1" high and I do not have any smaller wire mesh over that wire. Then the rest of the aviary has plywood at the ends of the building and plywood on the back of the buidling.

You could have some kitty cats that stay out around the aviary, that usually helps.

You can buy rodent proof wire....or you can make the bottom metre of the aviaries solid panels rather than open wire. Get rid of anything that would encourage them to hang around. And if you have the space, and no neighbours nearby, Guinea Fowl are excellent for keeping snakes down.

Peafowl, guinea fowl or even large breed chickens will all help to keep away snakes. Peafowl are especially useful.
