bird rescue adoption education organizations

Postby greygirl on Thu Jan 29, 2009 1:54 pm

I'm researching organizations. Can anyone tell me the most reputable ones?

Thanks.

Susan, have you checked out Best Friends Sanctuary. They are amazing. They have dogs, cats, farm animals, and parrots and are a no-kill facility in Utah. They even have some of Michael's Vicks dogs and are turning them around. I first heard about them from National Geographic on a show called Dogtown.

It is a 33 thousand acre facility.

Check them out.

Cool. Thanks.

Anyone know about PEAC? How is the Gabriel Foundation?

I want to start linking, promoting and donating when I can to great organizations that really help birds. PEAC stands for Parrot Education and Adoption Center. www.peac.org I like the whole idea!!!

Here are a few who have done wonderful work and have been doing that work for years. They are reputable groups and are all about the birds and what is best for them.

Oasis in Arizona http://www.the-oasis.org/
Wilson's Parrot rescue in Maryland http://www.wilsonparrotfoundation.org/
Phoenix Landing VA,MD and I believe they also work in NC http://www.phoenixlanding.org/
Mickaboo in California http://www.mickaboo.org/
Gabriel in Colorado which has been mentioned http://www.thegabrielfoundation.org/
Foster Parrots in MA http://www.fosterparrots.com/
MAARS in MN http://www.maars.org/

Those are a few that I respect They are about what is best for the birds and educating those who are interested.

Thanks for the list! I just posted in the Introductions thread that I'm thinking of adopting from a rescue when the time comes for my next bird. And, I'm glad to see the name of the rescue I am considering in your list...Mickaboo. I like what I've read on their website but it's nice to hear from someone who knows that it's as good as it sounds. But hopefully it will be a while yet, since I won't be adopting/rescuing another bird till my Buddy heads for the Rainbow Bridge.

Glad i could be of help. Mind you there are other smaller groups that are reputable out here but these are the larger ones that come to mind. I have other lists in my files as i help owners find reputable places when they are forced to part with a bird.

I got a mailing from the following. Is anyone familiar???

Best Friends Animal Society. www.bestfriends.org

You can sponsor a bird.

In this economy, you want to do homework before giving donations. I think it looks like a good cause, but I like to ask around.

They are a phenomenol organization. I know people who have used their vacation to go there and volunteer. I just finished reading a book on how Best Friends got started and they are truly doing it right. National Geographic has a series called Dogtown which is about Best Friends. A new season of shows starts in April. What they do is amazing. It is a no kill facility. I would love to visit them. They also have farm animals, cats and parrots. It is a 33 thousand acre facility. They took in 22 of Michael Vick's dogs and a couple have been rehabilitated and found new homes.

You can't go wrong by supporting this place.

I have always wanted to go there and volunteer but health issues took that dream from me.

Is the Best Friend bird santuary in Utah? Oh, I'd love to go! ... just hope I don't fall in love....

One more organization that my hubs found in a magazine: http://www.parrots.org/index.php/ourwor ... ey_parrot/

Anyone familiar with that one?

Yes, Best Friends is in Kanab, Utah.

And you also can't go wrong supporting the World Parrot Trust.
