Bird toys

Postby Nascargirl on Fri Dec 19, 2008 2:16 pm

Where do you buy your bird toys? I buy some from Petsmart and have ordered some online. Petsmart is usually so expensive and some of the toys I have ordered online are poor quality. I like to buy from bird fairs but I dont get to them much.

Awesome! Thanks!

Do you make your own toys? I have never tried that.

My last post in this recent thread includes links to my 2 favorite places:

cockatiel/topic98682.html Both places sell parts for making your own toys. Very important to use only bird-safe materials and to have enough experience with carefully-made toys to know how to make your own w/o making them hazardous. It really hurts to save $10 by making your own toy and then having to pay $300 for emergency vet care

Generally speaking I don't make my own toys... but I do have the supplies to do so! I'm just not as creative as I used to be, I can't figure out how to drill a hole into popsicle sticks (without ruining them), and although I have a way to string the toys, I don't like the options that I do have... or perhaps I'm just lazy!

There have been quite a few people who have opened up their own business making their own toys, and selling them! Some of the best dyes to use for toys would be the ones sold by Vitacritter!

MFids, you can make a hole in a popsicle stick using a hole punch normally used to punch holes in leather. You can buy one of those for about $10.

You can also buy wood pieces at www.caseyswood.com or www.craftparts.com

I make most of my own bird toys. I use hemp instead of cotton rope. Nothing to get a toe caught in. I don't use plastic because my first bird died from ingesting plastic. I also sell toys to make money for avian research at the University of Guelph. I don't keep a dime for myself. Safe toys are not a problem as long as you only use natural material like hemp, wood, seagrass, bamboo, etc.

Zazu, I actually tried a hole punch! Couldn't get it to work! Or perhaps I just have extra thick popsicle sticks??? They came from a craft store....

A regular hole punch is too big. The hole punch for leather has different sizes but even the biggest size is not as big as the hole on a regular hole punch.

Occasionally, I'll have a popsicle stick that will break but for most have no problem using the biggest hole on a hole punch specically designed for use with leather.

I ordered toy parts and tried my hand at making toys. Here is where I got my parts from......http://www.parrotasylum.com/homex.html and also.....http://www.birdsnestonline.com/index.html I made the toys to sell at the bird expo coming up next weekend. Some took some time to make, others didn't take too much time, but it was fun making them and now that I am almost done making all the toys for the expo, I am placing another order to make some more toys for my birds and also for some friends and family's birds! You should try it.....I enjoyed making them. It makes a mess though, and I have gotten pretty handy with a drill! Oh, sorry to tell you this Monica, but I managed to drill holes in the popsicle sticks just fine! Here are some pics of some toys I made....not too bad for a beginner, huh?
