Postby alexiis016 on Thu Nov 13, 2008 2:08 pm

Helloo again :) I haven;t been on here for a while, but i was just wondering. Has anyone here purchased a trainging kit thing from birdtricks.com? I don't havemy quaker yet, but i wanted to read up on proper training techniques and such. I wanted to know if it was a good buy o maybe you could suggest something that you've bought and really like the results. Thanks,

lexii.

I haven't. But I wanted to be sure you know about the Yahoo Group "Bird Click". You can brouse their resource library, and ask specific questions. Since all members of that group are intersted in training their birds, someone there is sure to be able to answer your question. And Kudos to you for doing your homework before
    you get your bird :!:

I think Barbara Heidenreich is the best trainer who's writing about her techniques. Here's a link to 2 of her books that Amazon.com has discounted:

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b_4_1 ... barbara+he

(Edit: I see that the URL software is still malfunctioning. Just go to Amazon.com and search books by Barbara Heidenreich to find these two.)

She's the editor of Good Bird magazine, which you might find helpful.

I still think it's a bad idea for you to bring a bird home, Lexii, especially a quaker, who'll need a LOT of your attention for the next 25+ years. At 14, you're on the cusp of an extraordinarily busy time in your life. I fear a parrot will interest you for 6 months, maybe 18 months if he's very lucky, and then he'll sit abandoned the rest of his life. This would be cruel, and I most fervently hope you don't let it happen.

I've spent over $1,500 in the last 2 weeks trying to save one of my birds. I'll bury him this weekend, if it quits raining. As I've told you before, parrots are very expensive pets. Please give this a lot more thought.

Thank you for giving her a good site to go to Blue. I hope that Lexi will be like I was when I was 11 and got my cockatiel Tweety. 20 years later he is still with me.

Lexi, do the best by this baby that you can. Make sure your parents are willing to house him for your first year in college down the road. Most colleges require that you spend a year in the dorms, which don't allow pets.

I have the first video from BirdTricks. Its good in the fact that is shows you how to teach the trick, but once you sign up, good lord, the messages and hype is a little over the tope. I found the part on handling birds that were biters to be less than stellar. They said in the marketing and in the video that they would be using birds that hadn't been handled, yet they used a couple of their own personal birds, who obviuosly had been handled. They have some really good info, its just wading through all the over the top marketing that is really annoying.
