Desperately Seeking the Perfect Name!!!

Postby Patti In Oz on Tue Nov 04, 2008 5:23 pm

We just brought home our first Ecky boy last weekend. My hubby wants him to have a name that says he is big and powerful. So far none of his suggestions (Bruno and Igor) seem to work for me. I was hoping someone might be able to suggest something that would appeal to both hubby and me and of course suit our boy. His little girl friend's name is Miranda. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hubby didn't like either one of those names...sorry. He likes to be clever with our birds names. He plays a bit of a game like that Kevin Bacon game. (Hope you know what I am talking about)
For example. Our Princess Parrots are George and Gracie. One would assume that they are named for George Burns and Gracie Allen, but, this is how he picked the names..... I came up with a list of names of Princesses.....Diana, Stephanie, Grace..... We both liked Gracie, but we couldn't find a good boy name and I made a joke about naming him after the singer Prince, but just the symbol he used for a while there (when he was called "the artist formally known as Prince").... I was just joking, but..... From there it went to just "Former", but that was a bit stupid, so then Jeff says "Forman", which then evolved to George....as in the boxer. So that's how George and Gracie got their names. Of course all of their male offspring will have to be named George too....lol Miranda our female Ecky as well as several of the other birds have a similar lengthy explanation as to how they got their names.

Okay, see if this is convoluted enough:

Strong, powerful, solid like a ROCK = Rock Hudson = the Hudson River = Rivier Phoenix = PHOENIX

Looks like Phoenix just might be it! Jeff and I have agreed to try it for a few days and see if it sticks. I think it will. Thanks for such a wonderful suggestion!

And they say we women are bad about changing our minds..... After 24 hours of being Phoenix, Jeff decided that wouldn't do and has named him Solomon. It's far from clever....seeing as he's SI Eclectus. But it suits him. And seeing as Jeff sat down over the weekend and worked out that NOT counting food and toys he has spent $4500 out of his own pocket on cages and birds in the past 6 months, I think he's earned naming rights. I have filed Phoenix away though. We are thinking of keeping one of our IRN chicks. And if we do...then he/she will be Phe.....

I'm really impressed with how Jeff has managed to settle Solomon in the past week. He was handraised but had spent enough time in an aviary afterwards that he wasn't all that keen on being handled. But Jeff has perservered and now Solomon wouldn't even consider biting. Yesterday afternoon Sol rode around on the wheelbarrow while Jeff worked in the rose garden. It was hilarious! Miranda and I were busy in another part of the garden, but I could hear Jeff chatting away to Sol as if he were another human.

Nothing quite compares to gardening with a chatty bird  Of course, I can't post this picture without admitting that early the next summer, my young macaw "escaped" on newly-clipped wings. I aged at least ten years in the week she was without food, water, and mama love in the treetops. Thank goodness, she got rescued safely, and never ever has one of mine gone outside since except in a crate. The experience changed me forever. You seem much more comfortable with yours :)

    Sol's a lucky boy

What a lovely photo! It's hard to tell who's having more fun! Yep...I know you're right. Taking them out...even clipped...is always a risk. But, we spend so much of our time outside (from dawn til after dark most nights) that it would be really difficult to be sure they got enough attention if we didn't bring them out. I do a wing check weekly, and at the moment they both...as Jeff loves to say....fly like sheep....lol. I do appreciate the reminder tho. I still have this vivid image in my head from several years ago when our GSC2 took flight. I can see her flying down the middle of our street, with no flights on one wing....wheeling along as if she had never been clipped. And we too went through that long painful wait until Angel decided it was time to stop being naughty and come home. I used to have a Corella that was a bit of a Houdini, but all we had to do to lure him back was to make a piece of buttered toast and a cup of tea and sit where he could see us. Good old Roy was ruled by his tummy for sure. May he RIP!

Soloman is a lovely name! And "Sol" has a nice, sturdy ring to it  And I think good old standby names may wear better in the long run than names that are too "creative" or contrived.

And Bluesbird, so nice to "see" you after all our "chats"

Thank you both :) That was before menopause. Things have changed 8)

Patti, that image of a loved bird flying away never dies from the memory, does it? So very glad we both got lucky. And our birds!

That image of a bird flying away will never die from my memory......and I didn't even get to know the bird yet
My Ivy loves going outside, and when we first got her, she was so severely clipped that I could take her out knowing she couldn't fly.......things have changed now and she has flight. Her owner gave me a flight suit for her, but someone borrowed it during the time Ivy was not flighted and I haven't gotten it back, so I think come summer time it will be time to buy a new flight suit for her!
Not surprising to me at all that Bubblelady came up with a great name.....her being a poet and all! very creative.......now I know who to ask or refer someone to if they are looking for a good name! :D
My sister just got a new baby quaker over the summer and needed a name......she already has a green quaker(male) named Monk....after the TV show. The new baby is a blue quaker and also DNA'd a boy. She had a name picked out for a girl, but not a boy......her boyfriend ended up naming him Mr. Ed! He's not a horse, but hey, he talks!
