We are having quite a hot spell here these last few days and more to
come. I thought I'd pass on this tip I received from my vet Dr. Julie
Cappel when I took baby Mojito in for a health screen.
Dr. Julie recommends to use distilled water in your misting bottle.
Normally distilled water is not recommended for any intake (where
your bird drinks it.) The process of Distilled water removes all
minerals and drinking could produce health issues (see water article)
but is the choice of preference when misting.
If you mist with tap water, well water, even spring water, when the
dampness dries, what is left on your bird's feathers are "minerals" &
other things that can be ingested by the bird when preening.
She says use room temperature distilled water but be sure to keep the
bottle out of the direct sun light (hide it in a closet or?) and mist
when appropriate. If you shower your birds use this same misting
after, like a rinse, to get as much of the remaining water off your
birds feathers.
Have a great summer!
