Cage liners

Postby Nancy & Jazzy on Mon Jul 14, 2008 6:21 am

I have stopped getting our local paper. I have always used the news paper to line the bottom of Jazzy"s cage. Now that I am running out of paper I need to use something else. What does everyone use that do not use newspaper?

Thanks,
Nancy & Jazzy

I'm still using newspaper, but some don't. You may be able to get "End Rolls" of plain newsprint cheap or free at your local paper. They don't use the whole thing. It takes too much time to reset the presses if one runs out!

Some don't use anything, they just clean the metal tray with soap and water every day.

Some get pieces of felt from the fabric store, have them cut to size, and use those. Washing them every couple of days. Of course, you would need several cut to size to make that one work well.

There are also the local free papers that you can get and use!

I have neighbors and friends saving their newspapers for me. That might work well for you too. If you work in an office, your employer is probably willing to let you have some sheets of copier paper and/or newspapers out of the recycle bins. If you pass by a subway station, they always have newspaper recycle bins that are overflowing near their exit gates. I'd never retrieve out of trash bins since they'd be dirty, but recycle bins stay quite clean in my experience.

Some on line pet supply stores sell actual cage liners. You can get some cut to size & put down 5 or six & pull out the top layer every day or so. They are kinda have a wax paper feel.

I use the cage liners, and usually get them from Cage Catchers. I think Polly's Perch also has them. They are really the greatest. I do as described in the post above: put several layers down and just peel off the top layer every day. They are white and look nice and fresh (for a while), and it's easy to spot any droppings change also. They're cheapest if you order 500 at a time.

I don't buy a newspaper either, but I do use newpapers for the bottoms of my cages. Each week, the local paper puts out a freebie with the weekly classifieds and other ads. Two get delivered to my office, and one to my home. Sometimes other people in my office buy a newspaper and bring it to the office. No one else wants them so I pick out the ones I want and take them home. My parents also save their newpapers for me. Occasionally, at the end of the week, I will stop at one of the locations with the freebie newspapers and grab a few if any are left. I know I'm cheap, but birds are expensive, and they'd go to recycling anyway.
