Bird seed in bulk... I know we've had this conversation...

Postby christie on Mon Jul 07, 2008 8:19 pm

Unfortunately, I can't find the thread!!

With the addition of the finch chicks, I am now going through seed faster, even with the better feeders. Instead of purchasing at the pet store, I am interested in purchasing in bulk. Those of you who do, what companies do you like??

My gravity feeders get clogged with the pellets, corn, soybeans and other fillers that they put in the finch seed. They don't eat those because of the size and it just messes up the flow of food, so I am interested in ones that either don't have the fillers, or where I can mix my own.

Suggestions?

We've used Double R Discount Supply. You just call and tell them what you want and they'll send it. I know others probably have a direct way, but this is easiest for us.

I usually buy my bulk seed from one of two local pet stores... it's by Kaylor of Colorado, brand name Sweet Harvest. I get it in 20lb bags. I also go to the feed store and get a canary/finch mix, usually about 10lbs give or take, and mix at 1 part canary to 2 parts Kaylor...

If you want to create your own mixes you need to either go to a health food store, or find stores or places (online) that will sell regular seeds in bulk.

Here's one place that sells bulk seed...

And one thread that talks about seed mixes...

Sorry though, I am unsure of the thread in which you may be speaking of....

I don't know where in Ca you are but there is a grainery in Gilroy that I use. They do custom blends also.

I'm in southern California. Gilroy is quite a drive away from me. Thanks though. I have found a supplier that does a custom blend for Gouldian Finches and they seem to love it.
