Bird nesting

Postby cmtate1 on Thu Jun 26, 2008 5:15 am

I have a bird nesting in my hanging plant. I live in texas so I need to water the plant daily. When I water the plant she fly out, than comes back. I am worried about what happens when she lays her eggs. I don't want to lose my plant but I don't want to distrub the eggs.

If she hasn't laid eggs yet, remove the nest and this will force her to move on. Tie a pie tin near the nest so the wind will cause a noise. Unless you have windchimes, I use them all the time to keep wild birds from nesting near the bird feeder. The wild cats have a tendance to hunt the bird feeder and I don't want to provide any easy meals for those darm felines :)

We had a robin that made a nest on our bay window. We removed it twice...and she came back and built a condo (I made a thread with pics) I guess she was more determined than us...so she won. We don't even sit on the front porch anymore, cause we don't want to disturb her. We did the same for a nest of sparrows that was on our side porch. The things we do for animals...lol.

If you don't want to lose your plant, I too would remove the nest and then temporarily move the plant. Poor robin! There is protective legislation that makes it illegal to disturb native wild birds, but I think that would mean if there were eggs or chicks in the nest. I doubt it means just an empty nest.
