Need More Advice/As Usual ACK

Postby spensergirl on Sat Jun 14, 2008 6:15 pm

Sorry to bother you all again, but as usual, I need advice and everything happens on the weekends.

As you probably know, Chilli, my amazon, has had a yeast infection. Most of it cleared but she was put on another week of yeast meds to be safe and those meds will finish tomorrow. She has been acting fine, totally herself, playing, etc.

She was fine this a.m., also. I went out and came back and she was sitting in corner of her cage (almost like nesting but no nest nor egg). She did come up later but she was much more quiet then she has been past week or so and not herself.

She did this type of thing once before years ago (sit in corner of cage and act quiet) and I took her to ER vet and she ended up laying an egg on the exam table of which it cost me 180 bucks to be told that was all it was and they gave her a vitamin shot. But, naturally this time, since she has been ill, I do not want to (assume) it is nesting behavior again.

She has been very hormonal with the clucking and parrot mating dancing etc, which I try to discourage, so it is possible it is nesting behavior..but I can't be sure.

Does anyone know if this is symptoms of nesting (sitting in corner of cage at times and being a bit off or more quiet).

Thanks for any advice and again, sorry for always bothering you all with this stuff.

I can't afford to take her to ER vet again as I am just about bankrupt from all her past bills and surgeries past few years and recently. She does not appear in stress, is not straining to lay eggs or anything, just a bit quieter and going to corner of cage now and then. She was fine this a.m., so I don't think it is the yeast infection, but can't be sure of course.

Thanks for any input on nesting symptoms.

I'm not an avian vet so I don't really feel equipped to give advice. I believe that if you think she is ill, she should see a vet. Since you've been there so much lately, maybe they would just charge for follow-up or let you make payments?

I went out and came back and she was sitting in corner of her cage (almost like nesting but no nest nor egg). She did come up later but she was much more quiet then she has been past week or so and not herself.

Was she on the bottom of her cage? I wasn't sure from your post.

Regarding the hormonal, nesting behavior... Does Chilli get 10-12 hours of dark interrupted sleep? Good sleep can help with this behavior.

Thanks for info.
Yes, she was in bottom (corner) of cage but she was down there trying to rip up newspaper (through the grate in bottom of cage) like she was trying to make a nest. Not just sitting there without activity. Then she was kind of sitting on the paper she shredded like it was a nest. She has been up on the perch more past two days and doing that crazy parrot dance/clucking she does each Spring..so I am thinking it is more hormonal/nesting. The vet does her recheck in about two/three weeks for the yeast infection.

I have started the more sleep for her. She normally gets 10 hours or 12 of sleep, but I work 3 pm to 11 p.m., so she gets up about 10 a.m or 11 a.m. and goes to bed at around 11 p.m. I have now started coming home for dinner and covering her at around 7 p.m. and opening her cage around 9 or 10 a.m.. This seems to be helping. I really do not want to have her lay eggs, due to chance of being eggbound, which we sure don't need with all the other stuff. So hopefully, covering her more and getting her more dark/sleep and trying to get her mind off the parrot dance will help.

Thank you for responding. I appreciate it.
