The reason your vet would give you Baytril along with the Diflucan is because of the "Bacteria" she found (along with the yeast). It is much easier to treat the bacteria (and a shorter duration) than it is the yeast. Your (or any) vet wants to knock out the bacterial infection first, then concentrate on the yeast infection. Your description of what your vet gave sounds perfectly normal to me. Is your vet re-testing as soon as the Diflucan is finished? Just to make sure?

Yes, she is retesting her in two weeks (once the Diflucan is done). The Baytril is only for one week. She said she would test when the Diflucan was finshed.

She seems better and so far has not shown any ill effects of either med, which I am glad about. She almost died with a reaction to a doxyciline shot last year, so I am of course leary until I know she tolerates something.

Spensergirl,

The organic yogurt is OK, but make sure it has probiotics in it, otherwise it's kind of pointless to give it to her. The Bene-bac is not very expensive and can be purchased at most of the pet stores like PetSmart, and SuperPetz. It's specifically blended for birds, and has a semi-decent taste. Hope your baby is healing quickly and the bad bugs are squashed :)

Baytril has been prescribed for birds by avian vets for about 20 years now. I have used it off and on when necessary over all of this time and never had problems -- the birds got well which they were supposed to do. Just follow the vets instructions.

The only thing I was told was that Baytril should not be used for baby birds (I was given a prescription for Vibramycin instead for handfeeding babies). I have used Diflucan too but still prefer Baytril or Vibramycin.

PS: Every prescription medicine has warnings, whether used for humans or animals. There are always those exceptions that could have a problem. Some people are allergic to strawberries too. But most of us eat them with no problems. Check with an avian vet (not a regular dog/cat vet) for the best advice for your birds and you will be fine. :)

I just looked up Baytril on the Foy's site. They sell everything just about for medicating birds. It's a discontinued item. http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/589-587.html

So what's your point? Businesses only sell what they can can make money on. Maybe they weren't selling enough.. The liquid must be fresh as it doesnt have that long a shelf life. Ask your avian vet if he is discontinuing Baytril

Your snarky remark to show knowledge - demonstrates the total lack there of...in this instance.
Pigeons are BIG business with lofts having hundreds of birds each. Pigeon breeders around the world out produce parrot breeders. Medication is the #2 selling item behind leg bands. A simple phone call finds the reason for discontinuation was do to the FDA pulling the plug on sales of all forms of Baytril.

I am sorry you took my response as "snarky" I did not mean to demean anything you said. However I did not understand your point .Did you mean to imply they stopped selling it because it was no good? I'm sorry but Baytril has saved Sinbad my 23 year old rescued nanday more than once.

As for my knowledge of pigeons my husband raised pigeons from the time he was 8 years old up until about 5 years ago. He is now 78. We have done business with Foys ----It's gotta be over 40 years long, long before the present owners took over. I still on occasion pick up stuff like hemp seed there.

I'll match pigeon knowledge with you anytime. No maybe not.You probably wouldn't like my snarky remarks anyhow.

PS.---The reason Baytril was originally banned was because it was detected in food animals such as cattle. It is now approved for certain uses in young beef cattle.

Since it is a very powerful drug it not only cures but has dangers associated with it.

You know ---come to think of it ----Maybe I am snarky. I apologise, --Not for being able to use google but for being snarky. ---I'M DONE NOW------Yogi

I just read this and have to agree with Yogi. No point in posting about a discontinued item unless you qualify it with a reason. "Snarky" - nah!! Yogi simply "tells it like it is"

Parrots are not pigeons. You can get Baytril from your vet, if it is prescribed by your vet. Be careful about giving your parrots medications sold over the internet specifically for pigeons. Parrots are tropical birds, entirely different species from common pigeons. (no offense intended to the pigeon lovers out there...) :)

I am not self medicating my birds and buying meds over the internet . My birds go to a respected certified avian vet. Just trying to make a point here and evidently am not doing too well at it. Maybe I should quit while I'm ahead---Yogi

Just to repeat, since it's gotten convoluted here, I'm a frequent and recent purchaser of Baytril from my avian vet. Since this is an avian chat, it seems relevant to note that it is not discontinued for use with our parrots.

Thank you all for the info on Baytril.

Just for record, Chilli took it for the 7 days the vet prescribed with no bad effects, just as most of you said it would be. The bacteria was gone at end of 7 days (although yeast required another 7 days of Diflucan which will end tomorrow). Thanks for your input. Jan
