SCARED BIRD

Postby DEBBIE INGHAM on Fri May 09, 2008 8:18 am

HI I ACQUIRED A YOUNG ALEXANDRINE 3 MONTHS AGO. HE IS ABOUT 11 MONTHS OLD NOW. HE STILL WONT LET ME NEAR HIM. HE WILL SIT QUIETLY ON HIS PERCH IN THE CAGE NEXT TO ME BUT STILL FLIES TO THE BACK OF IT IF I APPROACH HIM. HE SQAWKS TO HIMSELF IF I AM OUT OF THE ROOM BUT STOPS AND GOES ALL WITHDRAWN AGAIN WHEN I ENTER. ANY TIPS FOR WHAT I CAN DO. ALL REPLIES GRATEFULLY RECEIVED. THANK YOU

First off - can you tell if he was a hand fed or parent raised?

From her description, I would guess he was hand-fed and then put into a communal cage with other youngsters awaiting sale. When that happens, they get so little handling that they lose their tameness quickly. He didn't sell until he was 8 months old, so he went a number of months without human interaction if I'm right.

try giving him some yummy tidbits with your fingers... my birds love dried banana chips. You can also try almonds, sometimes cheerios works well too. Make it a treat that he ONLY gets from your fingers.

Unfortunately, it's probably going to take quite a while to get him to come around.

I HAVE SPENT HOURS SAT BY HIM WITH MONKEY NUTS AS THEY ARE HIS FAVOURITES. HIS DIET CONSISTS MAINLY OF THEM AND SEEDS DESPITE BEING OFFERED ALLSORTS. HE HIMSELF WILL NOT VARY HIS DIET. BRIBING HIM WITH FOOD DOESNT WORK. THE CAGE HE CAME IN WAS FAR TOO SMALL SO I HAD TO LET HIM OUT. HE REFUSED TO GO BACK IN FOR 50 HRS AND ATE NOTHING FOR 36 HRS. CONSEQUENTLY HE NOW HAS A VERY LARGE CAGE. I AM HOPING HE WILL ACCEPT ME BEFORE I TRY AND LET HIM OUT AGAIN BUT AM NOW WORRIED ABOUT CAGE BIRD SYNDROME. I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO FOR THE BEST FOR HIM.

I WAS TOLD HE HAD BEEN BOUGHT FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NOW GONE IN A HOME. HE WAS BROUGHT TO ME FROM MILES AWAY BUT ADVERTISED IN MY LOCAL PAPER. I AM VERY NAIVE AT THE BEST OF TIMES BUT HE IS MY FIRST BIRD AND I WENT INTO IT BLINDLY. HE HAS HAD SOME TRAUMA AS HIS HEAD IS BALD AND THERE IS DAMAGE TO HIS BEAK. WHEN I FIRST RANG ABOUT HIM I COULD HEAR A FEW MORE PARROTS IN THE BACKGROUND AND DESPITE BEING TOLD HE NEEDED A GOOD HOME THE WOMAN WAS NOT AT ALL CONCERNED ABOUT HOW LITTLE I KNEW ABOUT THEM.

He probably shouldn't be eating TOO many peanuts (aka monkey nuts). Raw peanut may contain a fungus that could potentially harm them, if not kill them. If you feed them, feed them only from a health food store, or feed roasted, unsalted peanuts.

As far as handraised vs parent raised... this means was the bird raised by it's natural parents? Or did a human raise it as an infant? You can get an idea of what handfeeding is by watching these videos...

Have you tried offering corn bread with veggies and fruits or maybe some pellets inside?

Have you tried offering cooked brown/wild rice, cooked 13 bean soup (no spice packet), and 5+ veggies mixed together? If you offer all together, in small pieces, he might be more intrigued to try some.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BILLYS FIRST 7 MONTHS. I WOULD GUESS HE WAS PARENT RAISED. WAS TOLD HE WOULD HAND FEED AND SAY HELLO BUT I THINK I WAS TOLD THIS TO SELL HIM. I DONT THINK HE HAS EVER BEEN TOUCHED. HE IS GENUINELY SCARED AND HIDES UP THE BACK OF THE CAGE PANTING IF HE AS MUCH SUSPECTS IM GOING TO TRY. HE IS VERY VERY GRADUALLY COMING ROUND TO ME AND ENJOYS A GAME OF PEEPO FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. I HAVE ONLY TRIED TO FEED HIM DIFFERENT THINGS ON THIER OWN WILL TRY MIXING A BIT. HE PICKS UP THE ODD THING BUT JUST THROWS IT AWAY. HE LIKES A BIT OF POMEGRANITE AND HIS MONKEY NUTS ARE LIMITED TO 3 A DAY. HE ONLY EVER EATS ONE NUT BECAUSE HE JUST THROWS THE SHELL AS SOON AS HE GETS FIRST ONE OUT.

    HI
UPDATE ON BILLY. I WAS ADVISED BY SOMEONE IN THE ALEXANDRINES WEB SITE TO REMOVE HIS MIRROR. I DID BUT FELT SO GUILTY AS THIS WAS HIS ONLY FRIEND HE THOUGHT. 2 DAYS LATER I WHEELED HIS CAGE INTO KITCHEN FOR A GOOD CLEANWITH HIM IN IT.WHEN HE DIDNT RECOGNISE WHERE HE WAS HE IMMEDIATELY ATTACHED HIMSELF TO ME EVEN THOUGH HE WAS CONFINED. THE DAY AFTER HE ATTEMPTED TO TALK TO ME. 2 MAJOR PROGRESSES IN 2 DAYS. I KNOW WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO BUT FEEL LIKE WE MIGHT GET THERE. MY MAIN CONCERN NOW IS HIS BEAK. I NOTICED WHEN HE CAME TO ME THERE WAS SOME TRAUMA TO IT BUT NOW IVE GOT SO CLOSE TO HIM I CAN SEE EXTENT OF DAMAGE. HE HAS A SPLIT DOWN MIDDLE AND THE REST LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE HAS TAKEN A HAMMER TO IT. DOESNT AFFECT HIM AT THE MOMENT BUT IM SURE ITS GETTING WORSE. TAKING HIM TO THE VET IS A DEFINATE NO NO AT THE MOMENT COS HE WONT LET ANYONE INCLUDING ME NEAR ENOUGH. PLEASE HELP US, THANK YOU.
