Indian Ringneck, severly overgrown beak

Postby highdesertdiva on Sat May 03, 2008 10:24 pm

Today,I drove over 200 miles to purchase a pair of Lutino Ringnecks. I gladly paid the money and got them out of that home. The owners were chain smokers. The birds were kept in a dark basement. They were fed cockatiel mix from a grocery store. She said she had never given them a bath when I asked about their preference of spray bottle or bathing dish. I got little history after that. I just paid her and left with them.
The male has a very overgrown bottom beak. It kinda wraps around to one side , and the tip is at his nostril. I am going to make an appointment at the vet on Monday. I cannot believe he is able to eat with his beak that way. How much of that is the vet going to be able to remove at one time?
The female has a bare ring around one eye. Its not sore or runny, just has a bare ring around it.
Their feathers are OK, could be smoother and shinier. Their diet was terrible. She did give them apples, but said they would`nt eat veggies.
I fed them and put some vitamins in their water. They are so devoted to each other. The male lays his head on the female.
They don`t appear outwardly sick. I will have a fecal done when I take them to the vet.
Just feel sick that they suffered as long as they did. Would just like to hear someone tell me they will be alright. thanks.

A visit to the avian vet certainly sounds in order. I've heard of other birds with severe beak growths and deformities that have responded well to treatment. I am no expert, but from the sounds of it, you may need to take the poor bird in for multiple treatments.

I'm glad you got them out of there. I've bought a bird just to get it out of a home and took another that the woman offered for free, even though I didn't really want it. As many of us have learned, free and cheap birds rarely turn out to be free or cheap in the long run.
