Tip for rope perches

Postby Mercy4Free on Wed Apr 30, 2008 11:25 am

I have posted this before but since there are likely newbies here, I wanted to post it again:

I do not buy the rope comfy perches for my birds. Why? Because if you buy a rope dog toy that can be untied, you can use that as a perch. And if your cages are smaller, you might get 2 out of one toy. I buy mine at the Dollar Tree so I only pay $1 for it when the comfy rope perches, which are the same thing basically, can cost up to $10 or so! All three of my cages have them now and all my birds love them! And, because they are made to be gnawed on my dogs, I think they last longer (though I never had a comfy perch so I don't really know how long those lasts).

Just knot each end about how long you think you will need in the center, and run any excess back through a few bars down or over to make it taught. The bonus: They love the ends to play with!

Just make sure the dog toy doesn't have any chemical smell or anything like that. My tiel has had his for about a year now. I noticed when my parakeet would get in the tiel's cage that he went right for it so I gave him one too, and now I put one in my finches new cage and they love it too!

That's a good idea to save money.

I have bought several of the comfy perches for my birds. I keep extra concrete, sandy, and comfy perches in multiple colors on hand. When I clean, I just switch out a clean perch for a dirty perch. I prewash the perches in the sink to get off any chunks. Then I run the perches through the dishwasher. The dishwasher does a really good job on cleaning the perches. I used to wash the comfy perches in the washing machine, but now that I have a dishwasher, I think it actually does a better job.

One reason I've bought all the perches in several colors is because I've heard of some Greys that do not like change, such as a new color for their food bowl. My birds are used to their new perch perhaps being a different size, diameter, or color.

You could also make your own comfy perches! You'd just need appropriate wire for the size of bird that'll be sitting on it, and some rope! You can easily buy a large amount of rope for $1 or less per foot (maybe even less than 40¢ - just requires shopping around!). All you'd need to figure out is how to attach to a cage! There is a "how to" on how to make your own bungee/boing perch.... I'm not sure if it could help.... but I'm sure if you modified the design you could make it so that it attaches to the cage!
