Postby wilikinia on Tue Apr 15, 2008 4:53 pm

Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone has heard of shipping canaries usps? Can you do that? How on earth do they control the temp and stuff? Thanks in advance! Lori

Well, the USPS can't manage to deliver regular first class mail to my house, so there's no way I would trust them with a bird!!

Cynically yours,

I have shipped birds Express Mail. The only real temperature control they have is when they are going through the shipping facility and on board the aircraft. When shipping birds this way I always ask the buyers to have the birds delivered to their post office instead of on their door step so that they will be in a temperature controlled area. I have only had 1 lady refuse - wanting her bird sitting on her front door step when she got home. Luck was with her on having good weather.

I wouldn’t ship from sunny warm AZ or TX to a state with snow.

[color=#400040]If you mean united states postal service, it is illegal to ship birds, it has to be done by airplane. i've never heard such a thing being allowed.

You may NOT ship canaries or parrots via USPS Express mail, first class, priority or registered either! Read on from USPS:

Nonmailable types of animals discovered in the mailstream must be reported in accordance with the instructions in POM 139.118. Additionally, the mailer and the post office of mailing must be notified to prevent future shipments from being incorrectly accepted for mailing.
525.1 Live Birds
Live birds, other than the type of day-old poultry specified in 526.31, are nonmailable. In addition, day-old poultry vaccinated with Newcastle disease (live virus) is nonmailable. The following are some examples of nonmailable birds:
a. Canaries.
b. Cockatiels.
c. Emus.
d. Finches.
e. Parakeets.
f. Parrots.
g. Adult birds, except those permitted under the conditions in DMM C022.3.3 and C022.3.4.
Be aware that the preceding list is not all-inclusive. Generally, all types of birds not listed in DMM C022 are nonmailable.

I get pigeons and doves delivered via USPS. They have special shipping boxes with filtration that are required.

Fowl DMM CO22-3.4

Adult turkeys, guinea fowl, doves, pigeons, pheasants, partridges, and quail, as well as ducks, geese, and swans sent by Express Mail in biologically secure containers approved by the manager of Mailing Standards (see G043 for address) are mailable if the number of birds per parcel follows the container manufacturer limits, and if each bird weighs more than 6 ounces. Under the applicable standards, indemnity may be paid only for loss, damage, or rifling, and not fordeath of the birds in transit if there is no visible damage to the mailing container.
