I'm so proud of my Congo African Grey

Postby fergies-mom on Thu Apr 10, 2008 3:53 pm

I rescued an CAG last october and when I got her she was very unbalanced due to barbering her right wing flight feathers. Because of this she would fall so hard on her keel bone I thought she might break it. So I took her to the vet and got her left wing clipped to match the right wing. the fix he falling she was no longer unbalanced. Anyway the other day she was taking a bath in her water dish and she opened her wings and I noticed that she has grown 4or5 fight feathers on each side. I could hardly beleive my eyes I'm so proud of her I just want to pick her up and kiss her all over she has stopped barbering her right hand wing the lady I got her from said that her wing had always been like that ever since she got her. Well not anymore she has stopped barbering and I think thats a possitive sign that she is happy and content in her new home. Now if she would just let me touch her. Things would be wonderful I guess thats going to take awhile she's had to endure alot of abuse in the first four years of her life. thats okay I have all the time in the world to wait till she ready. we have had a few break troughs she does let me touch her beak and she will actually reach out to let me kiss her beak before she goes to bed every night so thats good enough for me I'm sure when she is ready she will let me scratch her head. She has also learned about 100 new words and phrases since she has been with me. and uses them in context when she wants somthing she will ask for it by name. the Other morning she said want some chichen yumyum chicken just love it it was so cute. She also tells the dogs no barking go lay down Pat

 That is such a funny story. I love grey's too but I know they need lots of attention. I love their vocabulary skills. I have a caique for now. Thanks for sharing! Nanc 8)

To me, it sounds like she is happy now. Since she doesn't have the stress that she had in her former home(s), she quit barbering.

Since she won't let you love her up yet, just continue to tell her what a good girl she is and how proud you are of her. One step at a time. It sounds like you've already made many good steps. She will come around in time. And you're right about having time on your side. You two should enjoy many years together. Although Greys aren't known for being cuddly birds, both of mine can be quite affectionate and cuddly at times.

That's such a cute story! I'm glad she's doing so well and has made so much progress. It's so nice to see an animal who had a bad start getting a second chance at a better life.
