HI Gang..........

Postby BluWillow Farm on Tue Mar 25, 2008 8:31 pm

Just wanted to say Hi. And do a quick intro.

I (Dan) am from Wisc, I raised and exhibited english budgies many years ago, ok, not that longgggggg ago. I got out of them 10 years ago, and now back into bird again. I have 40 english budgies, a couple of them show quality, 7 pair of bourkes, normals, white face pinks, rosies, and a pair of lutinos in CA waiting for our weather to warm up to ship to my house. And now also getting a mate for my scarlet chested parakeet, that lost his mate last winter, (plus a couple extra)

Also getting 2 pair of red rump mutations, lutinos and yellow opalines. That was the first 'pair' of birds my partner of 24 years and I owned and I have a had an real itch to get another pair for old time sake, ok, so I am getting two.........shhhhhhh, dont tell him! LOL

Anyway, just wanted to say hi, and see just who is out there, feel free to drop me a line or visit my website, very primative, but I am working on it! www.bluwillowfarm.com

Thanks for all your time!!

Ooops! Forgot to mention the 12 year old shih tzu "Westly" and a 5 year old weiner/cock (weiner dog/cocker spaniel) "Rhiley". Them are the only 2 in house pets, but have my hopes for a WB Caique, real bad!!!
Dan

Hi Dan -- Welcome to UAS. I'm family and a former breeder who wants nothing more to do with it, so I'm bowing out. Wish you luck making friends. It's a tough crowd. Cute stories rule!

Thanks for the welcomes! I am working on the website, but it is threw yahoo, and very limited on what I can do. I do have MS Publisher, and have been workin on a new page layout, but have to clue how to publish it to my yahoo based site.

The cowboy hats/pic was taken in Tx last year, we normally go to the gay rodeo there the begining of March, (and do some bird shopping) but because of gas prices we didnt go this year. :( Been a LONG winter!!!

Oh boy...here we go again. Can we all take a big girl pill, and welcome this nice newcomer to the chat without starting crap again? It's not exactly comforting when you greet someone new to the site with "tough crowd" . Is that how we here at UAS want to be known?? Seriously folks...

    Thanks all again!!

I agree, LOL, no crap here, just wanted to start a new thread to see where people where, what they raise, or had for pets. I usually speak my piece too, but for the most part, unless someone really %$%$% me off, I tend to lean to a saying my G'ma used to say, "If you dont have anything nice to say. Dont say anything at all". BUT from what my mom tells me, she didnt practice what she preached! LOLOLOL

I cant wait for a WB Caique, I havent had a pet bird in a long time. One problem I have is with Rhiley (my weiner/cock). Being a bird dog, he has arleady got ahold of a parakeet and with one bite, she was done. Any advise on how to get him used to the bird? WHEN I get one.

I do have 5 scarlet chested parakeets waiting to get shipped and some red rumps. Gezzzzz where is SPRING???

Hi ya Dan! Welcome! I'm planning to get a wb too, so you're in good company. I wouldn't say tough crowd, but people who know their birds and have opinions....lol.
I have a spaniel too who I am gonna have to get used to a bird. I plan to put baby gates around the birds area until she gets used to it, and introduce them slowly. I think the main thing is to act like their meeting is not a big deal, cause animals feed into nervous energy.
Blessed are the flexible for they shall not

The issue with dogs, especially hunting type dogs and high energy dogs, is that many of them see anything held above their head like a toy.. be it a bird or otherwise... and it's a natural instinct to chase anything that moves.

If the dog is raised around the birds you would have a better chance of teaching it to leave the birds alone... however, even well trained dogs who have been with birds for several years and never hurt them may one day turn around and change their minds.

If you can't trust your dog, don't allow them in the same room as the birds, plain and simple. I have an akita mix (akita's are said to be VERY prey orientated, and have been known for killing household pets out of the blue, or turning agressive... the first dog I was ever around was an akita/rottweiler! And a few years ago, found a sweet loving, quick learning akita and her 3 pups - got them all into health, adopted all out except one pup, the one we have now) who is afraid of our cats, yet will chase outside cats (all but one he's come across... if the cat shows it's not afraid, this dog will keep his distance! By a good 10-15 feet! but if the cat runs, they'd better find a spot to get away! but then, Kodi has never caught an outside cat before, let alone anything else, so who knows what he might do with it if he could actually catch one!). I trust him with the birds as all he does is sniff at them, look at them, but otherwise ignores them. On a whole, the mammals here (the akita mix and 2 cats) aren't really raised around the birds since most of the birds are in a birdroom that the door remains shut and they never go in... and if any of the birds are brought out of the room, they are either going somewhere, or getting a lookover for one reason or another. Only one bird doesn't live in there, and I have a second out to keep a close eye on her.

Truth be told though, I wasn't worried about Kodi's mother, being a full blood akita, being around the other animals. She learned shortly that chasing the cats meant getting her nose swiped at, or her face in general, and she was obediant (not so much at first with the cats, but later on when she learned the house rules), even if she was 5+ years old.

Hi, Dan. Welcome to the forum! I have learned so much and enjoyed talking to other people who love birds. It's hard to find many people who share that love in my every-day world. My family thinks that I'm nuts! Some days they are right!!!

I have a caique, 2 parrotlets, and since I moved to Ohio in December have recently added a beautiul pallid quaker to my flock.

    Welcome Dan.

I have two Large Munsterlanders, which are upland bird hunting dogs. They are pointers and retrievers. These are two very high energy dogs. Although I had one incident that could have turned out badly shortly after we brought the second dog home a (he was a 2 year old rescue), I have had no problems since. (My Grey was on his cage. I dropped something on the floor, which spooked him. He flew into the next room over the new dog, which leaped up to catch him. Luckily, my BF was there with the dog at the time.) Now my dogs could care less about the birds, except when they are throwing food outside their cages.

Ironically, the instances I know of where people lost their birds to a dog occurred with a Malamute mix and a Dachshund. Also, I would not trust my parents' Sheltie around my birds.

Hi Dan, and welcome. Sorry if anyone was a little rude--it had nothing to do with you, just a personal tiff that had been going on--some of us have apparently not made it out of grade school, metaphorically speaking. I have had very few negative experiences on the board, so please don't let anyone scare you off. I took a look at your website--you are quite the renaissance man--a little bit of everything, huh? Very cool, and very nice birds.

As for the bird and dog thing--I think they can coexist just fine, but with some common sense--been there, and have done it.
