Auggggh Cathy you're killing me! Sorry that you left heaven (a/k/a Georgia), but it's GREAT that you're able to own a quaker. I love their crazy little birdie butts & would love to have one but, as you know.... Sonny don't allow no quaker parrots 'round here. LOL

Hope you've settled in well up north~

I have a beagle mix named Molly and she gets along just fine with the birds. She's pretty smart & eager to please so that helps, but basically I never made the birds a taboo. I would hold the bird & she was able to gently sniff him. Anytime one of them would flitter off their perch, I would either tell Molly to sit & stay or I would call her over to me. Basically just teaching her that when that happened she was not to approach the bird. I don't have to even instruct her any more. If a bird glides down to the floor she makes sure to go the opposite direction. Of course, when she does that, she gets lots of praise & maybe a treat. So, it certainly can work out. Good luck!

My caique will attack my chihuahua if she tries to come up and sit on me. She don't take crap from none of my pets. She also bit my poor little rats tail. Didn't draw blood but now when I let her run around she holds her tail curled up like a pug....

    rats?

What's with the rats Nanc? They really give me a creepy feeling. My boys have had hamsters and gerbils, but never a rat!

I think rats are cool, I've had about every pet you can imagine, hermit crabs, about every type of rodent including chinchillas, dogs, cats, and pretty soon a bird. I don't have many pets now, however. I think God made many pets to fit every type of person.

    rats vs hamsters and gerbils

Postby NancDavidDJ on Sat Apr 05, 2008 1:09 am

well this is what everyone thinks about rats, their tails are weird and just the yucky category that everyone puts them into. The rat is very intelligent, when you call them by name they come. Try that with a gerbil or a hamster....good luck!! They are dead now, but they used to run from their cage to the dog food bowl and steal the food even if the dogs were eating. My rats were so tuff they cracked me up. THey attacked my chihuahua, she would run away from them. The rat I have now I am still training. Every time you call them by name and they come to you, praise them with food. It really works. Every time I see people at petco buying hamsters I always tell them get a rat. They really do enjoy human company!! They are as clean as you keep their cage. Whenever I pet her she grooms herself. Sorry to ramble so much but I hope I shed some light on your question!!! Nanc 8)

My thesis advisor in grad school did her dissertation on rat sociability, and kept several as pets after her research was done. They can be sweet, friendly little guys but if they're not feeling friendly, MAN can they bite! LOL

Hi there I have 5 birds and 3 dog they all get along great My Shith-zu actually will protect the little birds conures and cockateil if they fly to the floor and I don't notice right away she will stay right beside it so it doesn't accidently get stepped on. My border Collie will actually let the birds ride around on his head or back and my Papillon just likes to eat anything that the birds drop. I have a Yellow crowned Amazon, Congo African Grey. a Fiery Shouldered Conure, a Green Cheeked Conure, And a Baby WF cockateil. I don't Buy Baby birds there are just to many birds out there that need good homes there is far to much abuse when it comes to birds My WF Cockateil was left on my door step in early December with a note that said he was hatched on Oct 23rd is not quite weined have to leave town can't take him I saw that you have birds in your window and thought you would give this baby a good home. Nice ah it was below zero weather and this baby was only 5 weeks old not even weined and she/he leaves it outside my door. Its a good thing I found it before it died stupid people any way thats its for reasons like that that I rescued the birds I have rather than getting a baby from a breeder. Pat

Hey, the thing about 900 views is that people who aren't part of upatsix communtiy or are guests cant reply.
I will share with you my pets! I love to brag! lol I don't have a bird yet but am getting a wb caique in june for certain, think I've said that. i have two rescued litter-box trained buns, many fish, a cavalier king charles spaniel and some praying mantises.
