Anyone have or familiar with this cage?

Postby keninaz on Sat Feb 26, 2011 1:16 pm

I found this cage and the price is great on it.
It appears to be a generic cage and the reviews say the assembly instructions are bad but what else is new today.
I thought it might make a great cage for a Quaker or two.

Wow, on edit I just checked shipping and this outfit wanted $58 to ship it!

For yrs, this forum has malfunctioned in a way that renders links unusable if the post is edited. You might want to edit your post again to show your link correctly if you're still considering that cage.

My male quaker is in this cage: http://www.birdscomfort.com/santa_barbara_cage.html As the info on the site explains, these Cal Cages are no longer available, but many others come in the same size, including this one: http://www.windycityparrot.com/Prevue-4 ... scount.asp This seller is very well known and respected, with a lot of great info on the site about selecting the right cage. They ship for free when over $60, as any cage will be. The site currently says free only 'til Feb 28, but in the past it's always been free when I've looked, so if you don't order by the deadline, keep checking back and it will probably be free again.

Re your comment about possibly caging 2 quakers together. Lots to consider there. Unless you buy both simultaneously from the same breeder, you'll need to quarantine the second one to ensure you don't put your first bird at risk of undetected disease. If you're unfamiliar with new-bird testing and quarantine, you can use Up at Six's Search feature to find our many prior discussions. After quarantine, the 2 birds must be caged separately until they bond. IF they bond. My quakers tolerated each other for 3 years before beginning to fight. I separated them 2 years ago. I'll attach a pic of the custom cage they occupied together. It was a great size and shape, but proved to be very unsatisfactory for quakers in that it was galvanized with 1" square bar spacing. For quakers, 3/4" is much safer. And, because quakers love to shoot poop sideways, best to have as few intersecting bars as possible since poop will inevitably drain down and harden in each weld :x The galvanized finish was much too hard to keep clean for a quaker, much less two!

Thanks for the site. And I had read about quarantine and all but I never dreamed that birds of the same species particularly would not bond.

In the wild, they're able to fly about and find a mate they like. In captivity, with choices severely limited, many will bond with "just about anybirdy." But those who've been handraised often bond primarily with their humans and lack the bird knowledge to form a normal bond with another bird.

I had a great big aviary at one time outside in another state many years ago and started with just a couple of parakeets. Then I was given more and more and they bred and I ran out of people to give them to.
I had close to 80 but they all seemed to get along~other than a few problems now and then.
I also had a Yellow Nape that I hand raised but it was a solo.
I guess I will just have to be careful introducing a new bird when and if the time comes.

I once knew a woman who had a wb caique for 11 yrs as a lone bird. she wanted to get it a friend but was worried because it had been a one bird household. She got a second caique and the two bonded within minutes of taking her home. You just never know :D

During quarantine of a new bird, the two usually get very curious about each other, hearing each other's sounds through the walls. The problem is for those of us with so few birds in our homes that having a planned bonding not happen creates logistical problems. It's not like you can usually return a bird who doesn't "work out." Happy arranged marriages are hard to predict, but if you can easily accommodate two birdie pals who don't love each other, all is good :D

    Thanks.
I certainly don't need more than one in all reality. I am home almost all the time being retired and we don't travel much anymore either.
And if I get a young one that bonds properly I suppose it could cause problems having two that don't need me as much?
And I certainly don't want to get into breeding.

I had an older cherry headed conure - Noel, and was given another older "cherry head" - Charlie. Charlie turned out to be a mitred conure, which is a similar species (like suns vs jendays). Charlie, at the time, was 12 years old, and Noel was estimated to be a few years older. Noel preferred being with birds but enjoyed some human interaction. Charlie prefers being with humans but also enjoys bird company - so long as his bird friends aren't small!

The two of them had known each other for about 4 years - until the time that Noel passed away - 1 year ago. The two of them did show interest and curiosity in each other, but never got along. Besides the fact that they were both conures with similar coloration, they were complete opposites in behavior, health, likes and dislikes. It was kind of ridiculous the difference between the two. One hated dogs, the other hated cats. One was easy to medicate, the other was not. One would eat just about anything I gave him, and the other was picky! Noel was actually friends with a cockatiel, and Charlie was buddies with an amazon in his foster home, although he bossed that zon and 2 others around!

Somehow, I feel that if I were to get another conure sometime in the future, then that conure would get along with Charlie. It was obvious he *wanted* to be friends, but he was also too strong and 'in-your-face' vs Noel who was calmer and was just sort of in the background.
