It's from my understanding that the more you keep something away from a dog the more eager they are to get to it. Also, by keeping said item above the dogs head, out of reach, may also excite the dog... after all, where do we hold treats and toys? When throwing a toy or a stick, where is it? Most often, above the dogs head.
Therefore, one could assume that keeping the two apart may lead to future problems. How might we fix this? Well, if we can get the dog into a calm state of mind, we must then carefully introduce the two creatures and rewarding the dog for calm behavior.
I have yet to have to try this as all the dogs that have been around the birds were either indifferent to them, or showed only mild interest.
