How to find a new good home

Postby Leea on Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:37 pm

A friend who has terminal cancer needs to move to assisted living and can't take her Mustache Parrot with her. So we need to find a new home. I could just put a posting on Craigslist but am not comfortable with that. She wants me to take him but I don't want to. I once babysat a friends Macaw for a year and so know what I would be getting into.
Should I use Craigslist or go to a pet store or is there a better way?
She is willing to give the bird away. However I was thinking almost any joker will take something for free but if she asks for money she may get more serious owners. She is even willing to provide a fund for his care.
Should she charge and how much? I think he is about 15 years old, forgot to ask her. Nice cage and everything included.
Hopefully we can wait till summer but if we need to transport him in freezing weather is it safe?

thanks for your help
Lee

What city in WI is she closest to? Does her bird see a vet at least every year or two? I'll try to help you find a rescue organization nearby. Could you get more info from her, such as gender (if you aren't sure he's male), age, and a picture to post?

i used craigslist to rehome my Amazon and it worked well for me. i got to meet the new owners and now we are friends and i can visit whenever i want. i was very picky where she went and now she lives with a stay at home mom, two kids, two cats, a pair of keets and a tiel.
Craigslist does prohibit sales of pets, but you can ask a re-homing fee.
i have bought and sold a lot of things using craigslist, you can't beat it because its free! you can post pics and say as much as you like, whereas putting that much info in the paper would cost an arm and a leg.
good luck, i wish i was closer, i think they are a really neat bird.

I didn't know that Craigslist doesn't allow the sale of pets. I looked and there are some listed for sale, I guess like me they didn't know the rules. In other cases the re-homing fee is high enough it is the selling price, I would not call it modest, as Craigslist suggests.
