an american singer who won't sing.

Hey, Hi fellow up at sixers, Anybody have any knowledge on American Singer Canaries? I bought one a few weeks ago, breeder said they sing "from morning to night". Well so far, Elvis (that's what I named him) ain't hound doggin'. Ah, I mean, he's not singing, he only peeps once in awhile. It's a nice peep but was hoping to have a singer, after all, that is why I chose "an american singer". Now wait a minute before you bash me for that last sentence. That wasn't the only reason, he is a very pretty little guy. He sort of looks like a wild finch, he's green and brown and a touch of yellow/white underneath.

Moving on with my next question for whoever wants to answer.... Can I put the canary in the same flight cage (24x18x18") with my female parakeet. She lost her mate last week and seems lonely. If I can, then should I remove the mirror toys? Would they keep the canary from singing? Eventually I will probably put him in with my other finches (Zebras, Gouldian, Shafttails). However right now that cage is a bit full as I am waiting for 4 new babies to be weaned so I can sell them. They are out of the nest now, but are still being fed by Mom & Dad AND Aunt and Uncle.

Anyway.. any helpful advise would be....well, helpful, I guess!
Thanks,
jan

I don't know much about canaries except one question comes immediately to mind: Are you SURE it's a boy??? If so, it may need awhile to settle in. Now about the budgie - I would not recommend putting your canary in with her. Female budgies can be highly aggressive and believe me, your canary would come out on the losing end. Good luck and congrats on your new canary. :D

I don't recommend mirrors.... and I don't really know much about softbills. I agree with Lilla. I could igve oy some suggestions that other people have given, but they may not help you and Elvis.

I read somewhere if you want a singing canary, hear him sing first. It also said just being a male doesn't guarantee it will sing.

Elvis is finally singing!!! :D I put him in a flight cage, by himself but next to my other finches and he is now singing. Sometimes it's hard to hear him over the other finches but he is definitely singing instead of just chirping. What a lovely sound.

I ended up putting my windowed female parakeet in with my two Fischers Lovebird boys. They are getting alone quite well. At first the lovebirds were a little afraid but now everyone is happy (including me :D ).
