sick severe macaws

Postby Nesting Box on Tue Jun 30, 2009 7:01 pm

I purchaces a pair of breeding severe macaws from a vender at the San Antonio bird mart. I got home with them and got them set up in their new home. About a week of them being with me the male wasn't acting himself. He got very sick and was taken to the local Vet here in Corpus Christi Tex. The bird was diagnosed with Psittacosis. A potientally deadly and highly contagious disease. Upon hearing this I contacted the man that sold them to me and he assured me that he had a health certificate on the birds and would send it to me. It never came and he never would answer any more of my calls. This vender came to Corpus Christi during our bird mart here. My Vet and myself approached this man and he couldnt produce a certificate and didnt offer any reinbursment or support towards the health of this bird. Please everyone be aware that this man has no regards to his customers or his birds. Do not buy from him.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I remember seeing that pair at that fair. I recognize those 2 birds from a local pet shop that had them for sale for a long time. I assumed they were clutch mates that grew up together. You may want to look into to that. What city is this person from?

What were the signs on your male? Was there discharge, was he sneezing? Just asking to learn more.

"Troy Friesenlahn, txbyrdbreeder@yahoo.com, 2103648474" Is this your information, or the person you bought the pair from?

I was told he had gotten the birds from California. He is, I guess, just an individual that buys and sells birds for a profit. I dont think he has an avarie. He assured me at the time of purchase that he had a health certificate on the birds to call him and he would send them to me. After the male got sick and my initial contact with him he refused to answer my calls. His number is a San Antonio phone # so I would assume he is working out of there. He told me that they were a bonded pair, four years old, but not proven. They havent mated as of last night but both are healthy and free of disease. it just saddens me that someone would just factory these birds for money and that i bought the pair without the paper work in the first place. The syptoms at first was just ruffled up feathers and lack of any activity. He did sneeze and eventually started throwing up. He was really in poor health before I even knew he was that sick. He just kind of stayed to himself. he did eat but just was not active. The throwing up is when I really knew that this bird is really terribly sick, Troy is in the individual that I bought the pair from. I would appriciate any help as far as pet stores that may have had this pair I would hate to be trying to breed siblings.

Troy Friesenlahn, txbyrdbreeder@yahoo.com, 2103648474 this is the person i purchased the severe macaws from. This is a San Antonio # so I assume he is located there.

This is not the nicest thing to say, but once again.
these are the lessons that we learned, one more time:

    1. The guarantee about "a pair of birds" is that there are two birds.
    2. Do your homework !
    3. Only buy from established and reputable businesses, and even then,
    there are risks.
    4. "I have the health certificates at home"
hatched out of the same egg as
"The check is in the mail ".
    5. Guarantees must be in writing.
    6. When we act in haste, we repent at leisure.
    7. We learn from expensive lessons.
    8. Sometimes, risks are worth taking, but if you have that kind
of money to spend, you have that money to lose.
    9. There are 2 sides to the story, and there is enough blame to go around.
    10. And now, because you're my friend, there's this bridge that's for sale,
and I know it's going to be a terrific investment.

Your words are taken lightly and with a grain of salt. Thank You for your wisdom. We have to remember we are dealing with living creatures and some people have a respect for life at any cost and some dont. So Would I do it agian. Yes I would spend the money to nerture a sick bird back to health. Would I leap into another deal with this individual. hell no. Will i be a bit more cautious about my investments. yes. and once more thank you for your kind and inapropriate words.

Well sad news. Since my last post, Ricky, my male Severe Macaw, had a relapse, became ill agian. We took him back to the vet and they ran a bunch of test. When the vet went back into Rickys cage to draw some more blood, Ricky passed right there in his hands. We lost Ricky...We never got to spend much time with Ricky due to his illness, but we did everything we could do to save him. We are having an autopsy done, will post the results when known.

I'm sorry you had to go though this. I would have the other bird tested to the hilt to make sure that she isn't sick too and just hiding it.

Unfortunately, bird fairs and marts are known for illnesses being present, hence why I will never attend one. I wish you all the luck with the remaining bird.

We had her tested initially, and have scheduled another appointment for Tuesday. She seems well very active and responsive. But yes we intend to test her to the satisfaction of the Vet. Thank You

I'm sorry for your loss. I have conure pairs and a grey pair. Even though they aren't pets like my pet birds, I do care about them. Hopefully, the female will be okay.

    Nest Box,
I'm sorry the male didn't pull thru. Please keep the female far away from any of your other birds. She may be a carrier, just not showing it yet. Have her tested, and re tested later to assure she is clean.

If there is anything I can do to help, you know my email. Don't hesitate.

I just read this today and am so sorry that he lost the battle. I would be very interested in the results of the neucropsy. And I hope the female is doing okay. It is hard for her to lose her companion also.

Personally, I would be finding out more about the guy who sold them to you. I know that where I live, the bird community is quite small and something like this would not be a good thing for that person's reputation or future business.
