Cauliflower????

Postby Patti In Oz on Sun Nov 09, 2008 8:00 pm

I've just read that cauliflower can be toxic to birds??? I've been feeding it to mine forever. Has anyone else ever heard this?

Cauliflower is more nutritious than corn and peas, but less than carrots and red peppers. If you're including it for variety, it's great. If you're relying heavily on it as a primary, daily ingredient, it's a bit lacking. I don't see it mentioned in Robin Deutsch's The Healthy Bird Cookbook or Gudrun Maybaum's "What Happened to my Peanuts?"

The only danger I've ever heard mentioned is a possible association with plucking. So little is known about avian food allergies and the causes of plucking that I'd think you should continue to feed it just as you've been doing if your birds regularly test healthy.

I found it here..... http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/animal ... ird_05.pdf The very last sentence. My birds don't get it every day, but they do get it regularly. Right now we have cauli, brocolli, celery, and spinach coming out our ears from our veggie garden. So not only have we been giving them that, but also the leaves from the plants. (our garden is 100% organic) I was getting a bit worried there for a sec...thanks for the input BB!!!
