Ringneck Questions

Postby julie3512 on Sun Nov 09, 2008 5:40 am

A lady is giving me a ringneck because she cant take him with her when she moves. I used to rescue birds but no longer do due to my asthma. thats how she got my number was from a lady I previously rescued a cockatiel from. I have never had a ringneck. what diet should he be on? currently the owner said he is just on a seed diet. I know with my tiels they get fresh veggies, a small amount of seed, brown rice and a few other foods.

this guy hasnt been held in 6 months and the owner says he bites now if you try and get him out..any ideas on taming him? As always any information is very much appreciated. I love this forum, everyone is so helpful.

Our ringnecks will eat pretty much anything. They are the least picky of all of our parrots. Thus far I haven't found much that they wouldn't eat. Mine love the nuts from Pencil Pines, all F&V. Even olives straight from the tree. I only have one adult handreared Ringneck, so I can't really help with that part of your question though. Other than just to say in general that gentle persistance usually pays off with birds. Just take it slowly.

Female ringnecks are dominant, so if your new bird is male, he should be a little easier to tame. Does he have a name? If so, does he recognize it? If he does, use it often, from across the room, from the next room, as you go through doors of the house and his room.

And give him lots to chew. They are chewing machines! Mine loves branches covered in leaves and blossoms and seed pods. Do you have unsprayed branches in your yard that are safe for birds to chew? My girl makes splinters of wooden toys in hours, so I can't afford to give her many of those, but branches are FREE!

He should become quite fond of what you feed your tiels. I give my Psittacula a greater % of pellets than my tiels get, plus a half teaspoon of plain, no fat yogurt each day. She loves dunking food, so if your birds have bottles, be sure to provide the new guy an open water bowl too at mealtime. Mine LOVES bathing in her bowl too, almost every day, even on the days I give her a very soaking spray.

Enjoy!

Unless it's just shadows then Rickie has black on his throat and neck. If so...then it's a BOY! Hens don't get the black and pink ring..... Keep us posted as he settles in. And CONGRATS!

Definetly a boy there!! Congratulations!! it looks like he may be plucking some, so definetly get that checked out too. I agree on the chewing machines! My hen is handled daily, but will let you know when she does not feel like being touched. Watch body language and eye pinning. Those are sometimes the only warning of an oncoming bite.

I have recently given my hen a phone book to chew since she loves ripping paper. I hung in inside her cage and she is thrilled with it! I also keep bells, branches and wood toys for her to chew as well.

Mine is a dunker too, I do keep the water dish and a bottle for her to drink from.

Once your boy is tame again he will be a real joy!!

Keep an eye on him with other birds though, while some here have ringnecks that are fine with other birds, mine is literally a killer. She was rehomed in the beginning because she escaped her cage and killed another ringneck. I never trust her with any of my other birds.
