Putting pair together for the 1st time

Postby highdesertdiva on Wed Jul 02, 2008 12:50 pm

I have a female Indian Ringneck, and got her a male companion recently. She is not hand tamed, and neither is he. They are both mature birds. he has had a mate in the past, but she died. My female laid eggs a couple of months back, before I got the male. I let her sit on them until she abandoned them on her own. Don`t care if they breed, just don`t like to keep single birds. So, I have had their cages right up against each other, with their favorite roosting perches only seperated by wire. I have had them in this setup for a few weeks. So, today I put them both together in a 4 x 2 foot cage. She is being a crabby witch. They are either at opposite end of the cage, or , if he gets too close, she chases him off. She has got a hold of him by his tail and wing feathers, but has`nt drawn blood as of yet. I do feel sorry for the male, because he is being harassed.
My question is....how long should I allow this to go on? I realize that pairs being set up for the first time, often squabble for a while. When can I be certain that this union is a no go? Thanks.

I would keep a close eye on them. Rearrange the cage if needed to mix things up and take her "territory" away. I would remove them to their seperate cages when you are not able to supervise until you are sure they are getting along and putting them back in the bigger cage together when you can watch. I got my IRN on a rehome because she killed another IRN that she didn't like. Needless to say, she will always be a solitary IRN because I don't ever want to risk her doing that again.
Owned by birds since 1988.

Clip the females wing a bit so she is not as able to keep up and the male can easily escape.

Well, its been a month and a half. The female is still witchy to the male if he gets close to her. There just does`nt seem to be a love connection of any kind going on here. And I`m sure that male is tired of walking on eggshells. Big dissapointment, as I did`nt want these birds to be in seperate cages and living a solitary life. Rats anyways....

Some ringnecks are bonded all year round; some are compatible only during the nesting season; and some get together only for breeding, with the female being bad-tempered as soon as she begins nesting.
Some ringnecks are able to flock together during the non-breeding season ( June thru November), but yours does not seem to be in that mode, which makes it probable that they might get together when she is ready to nest, but they will need to be watched as soon as she begins to sit tight on the nest.

Thanks for responding with more information. Are you saying that I should remove the male once she is setting? She had just finished with a clutch of (obviously) unfertile eggs not long before I got this male. So , I assumed she was in that mode. Even though they still sit at opposite sides of the cage, and she wants nothing to do with him....I just can`t see seperating them and having to go thru this again. She has`nt tried to kill him (yet), but she still does run him around on occasion. He is probably so afraid of her by now, that he may never want to try and get close enuf to mate her...lol. I was thinking about building them a long 8 foot flight (in the house) and clipping her wings, just a bit, and letting them loose to live in a flight where they could get away from each oher....until (perhaps) love calls. I just kinda feel sorry for the male. I think he sleeps with one eye open.
