Anyone?

Postby norty43 on Fri Jul 30, 2010 6:02 am

Can anyone tell me their experience with ringneck babies. I just acquired one to finish up handfeeding. It looks to be about 6-7 weeks old by the feathering. From the time I picked it up it has been extremely frightened of absolutely everything. It lays down flat in the cage and really wasn't wanting to feed as of last night after coming home. It was perching actually this morning but dropped to the cage floor when I opened it to take it out to feed. I did get about 15 ml in it finally. I've put millet and some small pieces of fruit in a low bowl to see if it'll start picking at that. I've had peach front conures, senegals, linnies, tiels, green cheeks, and quakers and never seen a baby do this. I did notice that the people I got it from did not bring it in a box or anything--held it the whole time. I'm wondering if it's just always been held. Giving it a week or so to warm up to everything here. Any info anyone can share will be extremely appreciated. Thanks--

I wish I could help with this one, but I've never been around a young ringneck. Does it perk up if you hold it?

Ringnecks are unpredictable with a variety of behaviors, and in spite of whatever favorable articles you might come across,
many of them are not responsive and affectionate in the manner of other parrots. You are correct in noting that the ringneck behavior is nothing like the conures which you handfed. The hard truth in this case is that you have not
stated any information ( or misinformation ) from the folks who produced this bird. I've raised a few ringnecks since the mid 1980's, and I appreciate them for what they are.

Thanks for the replies so far although I'm not sure what raising a few in the mid 80's and accepting them for what they are has to do with my question. I know they aren't like the conures-or the senegals-or the quakers-or the greys-or the tiels-or anything else I've had. None of the different species are like each other. I've never had a handfed baby be so afraid. I guess maybe that was more what I was getting at but didn't explain it well. I'm not sure it has anything to do with species so much as maybe it was pulled later than any I've normally pull. I pull when the oldest is two weeks. My babies have all been clingy if anything--not fearful. I've sent another email to the lady I got it from -I asked how much it was taking at a feeding and she said a tablespoon--I don't understand that either. I'm trying to find out if she is more co-parenting and the parents are actually doing most of the feeding because that is the only thing I can come up with to explain that kind of behavior. Even when you hold the baby it is still very afraid. Thanks again--

You already suspected that the baby was pulled too late.
I suspected that the baby was never handfed.
Although a baby at that age will easily eat from a spoon, I would expect that
the breeder would have some knowledge of an actual amount, like in cc's off a syringe.
Regarding my statement of accepting them for what they are:
Some become nippy and cannot be "untrained".
Some forget all about you when they become independant, except when they want treats.
Some enter into very close pair bonds. Some don't.
