A few of the first eggs do get tossed out sometimes, but it usually is nothing to worry about,
and the last 2 or 3 eggs will be incubated. There are a few variables:
Some birds like a slight layer of wood shavings in the nest; others clean everything out.
Some birds are nervous and flighty, and their behavior might be unpredictable.
Usually, these are birds which have been parent raised.
Usually, when tame birds start nesting, they are very calm, and nothing bothers them.
If my hens are tame, I would toss a small handfull of wood shavings into the nest,
to keep the eggs from rolling around.
(My lesser sulphurs insist on a totally bare nest, with just a wooden block on the
bottom of the nest.)
Some young birds have accidents, and either lay when they are away from
the nest, or lay from the perch. It's a good sign that your hen is back in the
nest.
