Aviary size for IRNs

Postby AussieParrots on Fri Dec 25, 2009 4:23 pm

Hi Everyone,

I've bred cockatiels for a few years and I've decided to upsize (slightly) to IRNs. I had an IRN as a pet for many years and loved him, so I thought hand raising some would be lovely!

I've ordered some books but they may take a week or two to get here and I'm just too impatient to wait! The internet is great, but you get so much conflicting advice.

I have a 8ft by 4ft aviary (approx 2.4m long) is this large enough for IRNs?

I've also read conflicting advice about housing IRN pairs together. Is it a good idea to house two pairs together? Would this aviary be big enough? All young are to be hand raised so it would only be the adults in actual flight area.

Any information would be gratefully appreciated!

Regards,
Prue

Hope you had a happy Christmas.
4 x 8 ia a nice size aviary for 1 pair of IRN.
I used to fly my birds together in the summer, but they
need to be separated by pairs before the breeding season starts.

Mine are 5 long by 3 high by 3 wide and I place the nest box within the aviary. It works well. I use construction cloth and double wall everything to prevent varments and the breeding stock from getting at the toes.
