plumhead hen

Postby victoria on Tue Nov 10, 2009 9:22 am

I have been trying to obtain a plumhead hen for nearly 2 years. They are very hard to come by in the UK. A man has 3 plumheads for sale which are 2 and a half years old. 2 of them have red colour on their heads and have red wing flashes. The 3rd still has a grey head but has a red feather on one of its wings. Is it possible that this could be a hen. Does anyone know please if hens sometimes have a rogue feather like this. My 3 year old cock bird is so desperate for a mate he has been trading one of my hen cockatiels so i have had to put him in a pen on his own. If i knew for sure that this is another cock bird i can start advertising again but if there is any possibility it could be a hen then i will wait a bit longer
Thank you for reading this
Sheila

That possible plumhead hen still sounds a bit of a risk,
although the closely related "blossom-head" hens do have
small red wing patches.
A long time ago, we bought 3 young birds on the chance that
we might have 1 hen, but the last bird was quite late in
getting his male coloring. I later bought a hen, but she
was not a healthy bird, which was the reason she was offerred
for sale.
I've decided that if we ever want to raise plumheads, I would
start with a true pair, even if that would be more expensive.
This is one species with a reputation for a scarcity of hens.
