Need Help Again, If Possible

I am sure you all get tired of me asking for input on my Amazon, Chilli, but any input is always appreciated, no matter how small or large. I know you are not vets, so this is just personal input so I can get some perspective and not be so worried until I get to vet tomorrow.

Probably, by the time anyone is able to log on, I will be at the vet, but just in case anyone logs on tonight.

I don't know if you remember, but Chili has had two (benign) eye growths removed from her 3rd eyelid in past four years. The last surgery, while short, she got the reaction to being under and almost died. So, I am leary of anymore surgery.

Anyway, she has been fine and is still acting fine, but I noticed today that in her right nare, she has what appears to be a ball like growth (white, no blood vessels in it). It was not there yesterday, so I am thinking it may not be a growth as I don't think one would grow so fast. I read online that Amazon parrorts especially have larger "operculums" in their nares, which it said some owners will mistake for a seed stuck there or similar. I could not find any more info on operculum which all birds have, in order to see it maybe that is it. However, if it is part of her anatomy, I think I would have noticed it before. It really did seem to pop up overnight.

The vet will check her tomorrow (Sat a.m.) as vet was out today, but my fear is if it is a growth and surgery is needed, so does not do well being put under.

My question is, has ANYONE here ever experienced a growth like thing in one of your birds nares? If so, what did it turn out to be? Does anyone have any input of what might cause this type of thing or could it simply be her operculum is more visible for some reason?

Again, I know you guys are not vets, nor do I expect you to be, just looking for some support of anyone who possibly might have seen this type thing before and if they have any input on it.

She is also prone to yeast infections, but has not had one in some time. I don't think yeast would cause this, however, but I don't know. It almost looks like a seed caught in her nare, but it is not as I looked at it under a magnifying glass and it is a small round ball like thing.

Thanks to anyone who might respond. I will let you know what vet says. I so hope we do not need surgery or that it is not something very serious. I am extremely worried tonight.

Any results??? Does Chili get Red Palm Oil? If not, have you considered supplementing her diet with it?

Monica - -

What does the Red Palm Oil do? I don't give it to my birds but maybe I should. I was thinking of getting the vitamin E oil for my amazons feet. They always look so dry.

Red Palm Oil (RPO) contains Carotenoids, which birds can convert to vitamin A as needed, thus there is no chance of vitamin A overdose. It also contains vitamin E. Vitamin A is good for mucous membranes, feather growth, skin, and even eyes.

The recommendation that I've heard goes by the weight of your bird: 1/8 teaspoon up to 250g, 1/4 tsp up to 500g, ¼ to ½ tsp up to 1000g.

I've heard that amazons often suffer from obesity and hypovitaminosis A. Recommended dosage is no more than once a week, and you can even cut the amount in half if you would feel more comfortable. It can be fed straight, spread on toast, mixed into fresh foods, etc.

Wheat Germ Oil (Vitamin E & EFA's) and Cod Liver Oil (Vitamin A & D, and Omega E's), as well as a mix of Flax Seed Oil and Corn Oil for the EFA's. However, I do not know the proper dosage of the WGO and CLO and would be hesitant to recommend a good amount, particularly for the fact that CLO is high in vitamin A, thus there's a possibility of hypervitaminosis A... I've read that CLO should only be given if there is no other source of vitamin D. From the below article, WGO and CLO can be given at 1 tablespoon (ea) per 1lb of seed.

From another article, I've read it's 1 teaspoon of each to 10 lbs of food.... which his a *HUGE* difference.

So long as your bird has a healthy well rounded diet, with full spectrum lighting or natural sunlight, they may not need any extra supplements.

Thank you so much - I think I will get some.

My birds do get a good variety of pellets, seeds, fruit and nut mixture, 12 grain bread, scrambled eggs (Occassionally) and fresh fruits and veggies. But the amazon doesn't eat much of the fresh except for apples and frozen corn. He does love his scrambled eggs. And walnuts.
