OWAs Need info on flock behavior

Postby nancd777 on Mon Nov 26, 2007 6:50 pm

We are owned by 3 Amazons that arrived at different times. The older gentleman was a rescue and has a quarantine band so is at least 17. The 3 1/2 yr old female was a trade. They are out of the cage a lot and have become good friends. My question is will they breed in the spring and what can I do to prevent it. The other Amazon is a DYH and also a rescue. All seem to get along fine if let out at different times. The OWAs get along so well that they are out together always and have begun to snuggle and nap together during the day. At night they stay in separate cages but switch back and forth all day. These birds are right in the middle of all the family goings on. They have begun to rip and tear all the boxes I can give them as well as remove most of my wallpaper. Given their affection for each other...will I have flying fits and hormonal rages come spring with the Male attacking anyone who comes close? Separation is a last resort as they cry for each other when left in their respective cages.

I think with the 2 males (I'm assuming) and a female, my guess is it will be interesting as time goes on and if you plan on breeding will have to seperate whom ever paired off and will have an odd man out. Amazons males can get very hormonal/territorial, one of my BFA(parent raised male not tame) has chosen my daughter and will attack anyone around her, the others get very loud and Amazon Strut to the sight of the other males during breeding season. It's programmed in them even as pets.....I would hate to be in the jungle during breeding season... Amazons Rule

amazons are flock animals, the oldest male is old enough to breed but the hen is to young she will not breed till she is 5 + .it"s cool that they get along so well,If you dont want big trouble, you should not give them any thing they can shred/tear this is what they do in the wild when making a nest..... Watch the males closely when there around each other and if there is any sign of trouble everyone needs to go back to there own cage, make sure everyones wings are clipped you don't wont a hormonal amazon in your face!!!!!! Hope this helps

Things that you can do to prevent mating behaviours are no more boxes or anything they can use for a nest. If you give them warm food, let it cool off first, so it's not like regurgitated food. 12 hours of darkness for sleeping can help. Also, no petting of anything other than the head and neck so as not to stimulate the birds.
