Postby eblake38 on Sat May 15, 2010 10:20 pm

I am currently hand feeding 2 baby orange wings, they seem to not want much or anything to eat, i cannot get them to bob that head much anymore, and they dont want to take much, i am feeding them 3 times per day, i cut back from 4 bacause they were just about refusing to eat the fourth one, they were doing great on the 3 and here this week they want to refuse just about everythiing, i get about one squirt in em and they are just about finished, does anyone have any ideas, or anything i can try to do with them, i am to the virge of pulling out my hair here. their ages are 36 and 33 days old,

    They might be too cold.
Are they warm enough ? They need about 80 - 85 degrees F.
What's the room temperature, and are they in a brooder ?
An easy emergency brooder is a cardboard box, with a utility lamp
and a regular 25 watt or 40 watt bulb, about 6 - 10 inches above the babies.
I crumple some newspaper to retain warmth and if the babies want a
shield from the light, and be sure that the babies can move away from the light
    if they need to.

Well i have them in a kinda tall plastic container, i leave the lid off of it because i just feel that with the lid on even though it has a big hole in it for air, it just seems so suffocating to me. But i will put the top back on it and try that and take the temp inside of it first before i put a light on them, i will try that again to see it that helps some. Thanks for the advice again, and oh i have shredded newspaper in the bottom of the container, about 2 to 3 inches thick, that is until they trample it down some.

I have found that if I let the feeding formula get too cool they won't accept it. I also have found that making it a little juicy helps. This is my fifth year hand feeding the parrots. They have all done well this year.

If your babies don't want to eat don't force them. Wait till the next feeding. Once they get feathered out good they don't need heat. I use glass aquariums to raise my babies. I put wood shavings in the bottom. (NO CEDAR!!!!!!) I have three Magna Double Yellow Heads that are 3-7-9 days old. I put their tank on a heating pad and they do fine.

Make sure that their food is between 105 & 109.5 when you feed them.
